What is IELTS?

IELTS holds immense importance for international students and workers globally. IELTS, short for the International English Language Testing System, is a renowned and globally recognized entrance exam that has become an essential requirement for individuals seeking visas, higher education, or permanent residency in English-speaking countries.

As an international student or worker, IELTS acts as a comprehensive assessment tool to gauge your language abilities. Designed to thoroughly assess your listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, IELTS measures your English proficiency and ensures you have the correct language skills required to succeed in an English-speaking environment.

IELTS has widespread acceptance in numerous countries, mainly Canada, UK, USA, Australia, and New Zealand, where it is one of the main requirements for migration and abroad studies. Additionally, more than 10,000 academic institutions, immigration authorities, and employers, including renowned institutions in the USA, acknowledge the IELTS scores.

Given the current trend among millennials and Gen Z pursuing studies abroad, the IELTS test has become important for them. The IELTS examination holds tremendous value in their lives as it determines their future career path. Therefore, it is important for students to carefully plan and choose the best IELTS coaching classes in Ahmedabad.

The IELTS Listening test assesses a wide range of listening skills, evaluating your ability to understand the English language correctly. During the listening test, you will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and respond to a series of questions.

The Listening test is of 30 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes provided for transferring answers. There are a total of 40 questions in various formats  Viz.  multiple-choice, sentence completion, labeling diagrams, and completing forms or tables etc.

Each correct answer is one mark, and the scores, ranging from 0 to 40, are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. The results are divided into whole and half bands.

The IELTS Reading test assesses various reading skills, and needs quick and efficient reading while managing time effectively. It consists of three passages and questions, with differences between the Academic and General Training versions.

The test evaluates your comprehension and ability to follow what is written in English texts, showcasing your proficiency in understanding written information.

In Academic Reading, you engage with lengthy texts suitable for university-level i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate studies, while General Training Reading focuses on everyday English sources.

The test duration is 60 minutes with 40 questions, and scores are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale.

The IELTS Writing test is designed to measure your proficiency in various elements of writing. It assesses your ability to provide appropriate responses, effectively organize your ideas, and demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary and accurate grammar usage.

During the IELTS Speaking test, you will interact with a certified examiner, simulating real-life situations. The test will be recorded and may include different accents. It’s important to remain relaxed and speak naturally throughout the test.

The Speaking test evaluates various skills, such as expressing opinions, providing information on everyday topics, and effective communication. The examiner assesses your ability to speak at length about a given topic, organize ideas coherently, justify opinions, and analyze issues.

The Speaking test comprises three parts.

There are two types of IELTS tests: Academic and General Training.

The IELTS Academic test can be taken either in person at a test center on paper or on a computer at a private location with a stable internet connection.

IELTS General Training is exclusively available for in-person testing at a test center, offered in both paper and computer formats.

Although the Listening and Speaking tests are similar for both Academic and General Training, the Reading and Writing tests have variations. It is important to prepare specifically for the type of test you require.

All IELTS tests involve completing the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections on the same day without breaks. However, the Speaking test might be scheduled separately, up to a week before or after the other tests.

If you have booked IELTS Online, the Speaking test is typically arranged before your other tests.

The entire test has a total duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Each component of the IELTS test — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — carries equal weightage in terms of individual scores. To determine the overall band score, the average score of all four test sections is calculated. Among this score, .25 is rounded up to the next half band (for instance 6.5) and .75 is rounded up to the next whole band (for instance, if the score is 6.75, it will round up as 7).

Each country has its own minimum IELTS score requirement for immigration purposes. For example, the IELTS minimum score for Canada study abroad after grade 12th is 6 band, while in the UK, generally between 5.5 to 6.5 band.

Each band on the IELTS scale corresponds to a specific level of English language proficiency. Here is an overview of what each band represents:
