4 Things To Remember While Applying for Your Canadian Post-Graduate Work Permit

While studying in Canada, obtaining a Post-Graduation Work Permit depends greatly on the course and duration of your studies. In most cases, students are granted a work permit under the PGWP for as long as they are enrolled in the study program.

Even students who study abroad have a professional future. Intending to study in another country, one of the main aspects that excite us more is the view of a successful career, and by all means, Canada definitely meets this standard.

However, there is one important step between a student and a worker in Canada. After getting the degrees, you will need a postgraduate work permit to be able to work.

A postgraduate work permit allows students to obtain valuable Canadian work experience. With a postgraduate work permit, you can stay and work in Canada for years or even become a permanent resident. While placing the application, a few essential things just need to be kept in mind to maintain a good basement for success.

1. Update yourself on the latest immigration laws

Contentedly, information is now more accessible than ever. There are multiple digital sources focused on immigration, both national and international. Therefore, you will always find the tools to keep you informed and update you on even the tiniest shifts.

Official websites contain the necessary information to stay updated on your work permit guidelines, which can even come in handy if you’re seeking permanent residency in Canada.

2. Keep the documents and receipts ready

When it comes to studying abroad, documents are always the most important. You need to be organised and balanced, from certifications to available permits. This fact would not change at this point.

Keeping your documents and receipts organised will be incredibly helpful in the future. Notwithstanding, preparing needs to start even before applying for a PGWP.

The first set of documents to be presented will be your postgraduate completion certificates, alongside other important declarations such as:

  • The degree or diploma certification.
  • Documents transcript.
  • An official letter from the college or university.
3. Working full-time while waiting for the decision

Canada offers many opportunities for students to work, but part-time work is the most common option, aside from co-op study programs, which allow students to perform career-related functions while getting paid. You cannot begin working until your work and study permit have been approved.

However, there are certain criteria:

a. Working after you complete your study program
Working opportunities are available in Canada, if you seek to work within your field of academic training, you will find open doors for you. In spite of the wide range of opportunities, obtaining a work permit remains an inevitable challenge.

b. If you have already applied for a work permit
While waiting for the permit, you can focus on other work sectors capable of generating passive income, such as local jobs or digital content creation.

c. If you’re starting a new study program
It is possible to extend your stay in the country if your study permit expires before you get your grades. Alternatively, you can leave the country and apply for your PGWP.

d. if your study permit expires before you get your marks, you have two options.

  • You can apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada longer, or
  • You can leave Canada and apply for your PGWP from your home country.
4. Apply as early as you can

After graduation, students have 180 days to apply for a PGWP. Early application is crucial for students. Your study permit expires after 90 days, and you must restore your student status before applying for your PGWP. Nevertheless, if you do not apply within 90 days, you will have to leave the country. It is possible to regain your student status through an online application, payment of a fee, and restoration of your student status.
