The GRE is accepted as a standard admissions test by many graduate schools in the USA. The computer-based test assesses analytical, verbal, math, and English skills. Your scores will determine graduate school admission.
GRE—Graduate Record Examination can be a challenging test, which is true in some respects. While the GRE is commonly believed to be difficult, many factors make it easier. The best part is that you can learn everything from scratch, even if you’re not an avid reader or good with numbers.
This article will help you understand the GRE test when you can apply to universities and detailed instructions on how you can send your GRE score to the universities of your choice.
The Graduate Record Examination, or GRE, is a standard test used for admissions in many graduate programs across the world. The multiple-choice computer-based test measures analytical and verbal skills and general math and English knowledge.
There are almost 1000 test centres in more than 160 countries offering the GRE three times per year – in April, September, and October. You will have to make an appointment to take the test, and you are advised to plan and book your test well in advance. For students applying to a master’s program in the United States, they generally need to take the GRE General Test.
The General Test is offered in paper-based, computer-based, or computer-delivered formats. You can select the format you prefer when you register to take the GRE.
Any score above the median or 50th percentile, which would mean you scored higher than at least half of all test-takers, is considered a good score, even though there is no blanket cutoff.
Your score report will show three GRE scores: Quantitative Reasoning (math), Verbal Reasoning, and Analytical Writing (essays).
GRE Scores Range
After a candidate takes the GRE test, their results are valid for five years.
Getting accepted into a university depends on your GRE score. Generally, universities give preference to applicants with higher GRE scores. Additionally, if you are applying to a competitive program such as an MS or PhD program, a high GRE score can help you get a scholarship.
You can send GRE scores to universities through ETS, and the results will be accessible within your ETS account for your review. All designated universities will receive your results within 10–15 days of your test date.
You should follow the following procedure:
You will receive your unofficial GRE quant and verbal scores during your test day. After the GRE test date, examiners publish the final GRE results with their assessment of analytical writing. Taking the GRE is free of charge, and your results can be sent to four institutions. After completing the test, you will be able to select these institutions. The computer system will provide the school codes, so one does not need to know them.
The GRE scorecard usually takes 10–15 days to arrive. After the test, you can send the same through the following method:
Scores may also be sent before college applications are submitted. Make this decision carefully, as you will be sending your scores in advance.
Ensure that the recipient’s name appears on the ETS list before appearing for the GRE. Your four chosen institutions will automatically receive their official GRE scores through ETS.
You can expect to receive Additional Score Reports within five days at the latest if you request them to be sent to more institutions. The processing of a fax or mail application may take 10 business days. Admissions scores must be submitted before the deadline.
Around 10–15 days after the test date, you can send your GRE scores to the universities of your choice via your ETS account.
Sending GRE scores to up to four universities is free. There will be an additional USD 27 charge per recipient if you wish to send scores to more than four universities. A five-day process is involved in the same.
Students with different backgrounds and experiences can compare themselves through the GRE tests since they are consistent and objective measures. A university’s decision to accept students is influenced by GRE scores sent before the deadline. Moreover, it assists universities and colleges in identifying students with the necessary academic and professional preparation to pursue graduate studies.
