- EDUCATION SYSTEM OF THE AUSTRALIA
The Australian education system stands out due to its unique incorporation of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), a national policy introduced in 1995. With the AQF, your degree is both recognized and authorized by the government within Australia and globally.
Within the AQF, a network of 10 interconnected levels unifies various educational institutions into a single national system, from schools to colleges and universities. This offers students flexibility and helps them to improve career planning, allowing them to choose between different study levels as long as student visa requirements are fulfilled.
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
Australia’s education system offers vocational courses allowing students to bypass university education and enter the job market. These courses focus on practical learning and industry-specific skills compared to traditional classes that depend on theoretical knowledge.
However, please note that these courses generally lead to certifications, diplomas, or advanced diplomas only and not offering degree certificates. Popular industries for VET students include tourism, hospitality, business, sports, music, arts, marketing, and manufacturing.
Pathway Programs — Bridging to Higher Education
International students might require additional support to adapt to Australia’s education system and teaching methods. Thus, pathway programs to higher education offer foundation courses and English language programs.
Please note that this program is optional; however, it is a good idea to brush up on your English language proficiency while in Australia even though you score well on your English proficiency test — as you might need to adapt to the Australian accent.
Postgraduate Study
In Australia, universities and private colleges offer postgraduate courses in various fields.
• A master’s degree can be pursued through coursework, research, or an extended program.
• For the Doctoral level, there are options for research doctorates (Ph.D.) and professional doctorates.
The admission criteria for postgraduate levels are competitive — it requires high English language proficiency and strong academic qualifications.
- Intakes in Australia
The February Intake, also referred to as Semester 1 intake, is the primary intake season. While some universities offer limited availability, all programs are open for admission. As it is the main intake, the universities receive huge applications. You may find ample grant and scholarship options.
The July Intake, also known as Semester 2 intake. It is considered a secondary intake season. Those who have missed the deadline or couldn’t get admission in the First — February intake can apply for this intake. The number of applications received is generally lower compared to the February intake. Scholarships and grant offerings are relatively limited for this period.
Lastly, the November Intake — the Semester 3 intake, is the least popular as it is open for selected programs only. The number of applications received during this intake is limited.
- Document Required for Admission into Colleges and Universities
One of the main admission requirements for international students applying to Australian universities are as follows:
1. To be eligible for diploma-level courses, students must score a minimum of 60% in 12th grade.
2. For admission to bachelor’s degree programs, students should score at least 65% or higher in 12th grade.
Here are the mandatory additional documents requirements:
Once your study abroad application is successful, the university/college you have chosen will send you a Letter of Offer. In this letter, you will find the details about your program, the conditions for the particular course, and the fees you need to pay if you decide to accept the offer. Ensure that you fully understand everything, including what happens if you are unable to start or finish your course.
After you’ve accepted the offer and paid your university/college fees deposit, they will provide you with a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). This letter confirms that you have signed up for the course. This is one of the important documents you will require when applying for your Australia student visa.
As English is generally not India’s first language, you need to show how well you can read, speak and understand the language. This is important as in Australia, major courses are taught in English; thus, you need to demonstrate your proficiency in English.
Here are the English language test score requirements for international students:
• IELTS: An overall score of 6.0 to 6.5
• TOEFL (internet-based test): An overall score of 60 to 90.
• CAE (Cambridge English Advanced): An overall score of 169 to 176
• PTE Academic: An overall score of 50 to 64.
The Australian government wants to ensure you’re coming to study only and not intending to stay longer after completing the course. Therefore, you are required to write a statement showing that you intend to visit Australia only for study purposes and you will return to India once your course is finished. In addition, you are also required to demonstrate how the course fits your future goals.
