IELTS — The International English Language Testing System is recognized as the most popular English language test globally, with English speakers as proof of their ability. The IELTS test assesses the candidates in four areas — listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The IELTS result is designed to be simple and easy to understand by global education. Thus, the score is presented on a 1–9 band scale, where 1 is the lowest and 9 the highest.

The British Council developed IELTS in collaboration with the University of Cambridge and an Australian organization (IDP Education Australia). IELTS acts as proof to show the English language level you can speak, listen, read and write. The IELTS test is acknowledged by over 10,000 institutions globally, including universities, colleges, governments, and employers.

Depending on the countries and universities you are applying for, students require a specific IELTS score to get admission and a visa. In the UK for a Student Visa — general Tier 4, bands requirements with an overall minimum score of 5.5, while in Canada is 6.0.

However, if you are applying for a UK visa, you need to take an IELTS test approved for UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) purposes known as IELTS for UKVI. This applies to everyone coming from a non-English speaking country.

While there is no change in the content, format or level of difficulty and scoring, IELTS for UKVI simply follows certain extra security protocols to ensure the authenticity of the test taker. Also, your Test Report Form (TRF) may look slightly different from the one give for IELTS Academic or General Training.

UKVI stands for (UK Visa and Immigration). The students from non-English speaking countries looking to study or work in the United Kingdom (UK) need to clear IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training). IELTS for UKVI is a UK government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). IELTS and IELTS for UKVI follow the same format, content, scoring, and level of difficulty. The only thing different is the Test Report Form (TRF). 



PTE is Pearson Test of English Academic. PTE is a multi-level test, remarkably like IELTS and TOEFL. It is a computer-based English language test to determine the reading, listening, writing, and speaking capability of the candidate. The non-native English speakers willing to study abroad must appear for this test.

The three-hour-long computer-based test focusses on day-to-day English rather than high-level English language and tests a student on his/her ability to effectively understand the language as spoken daily. The multi-level grading system ensures a better understanding of the student’s proficiency in the English language.

The question set often combines the two skills together speaking and writing. The exam format has 20 questions — speaking and writing 70–90 mins, reading skills 30–40 mins, and listening 45–60 mins. The entire test lasted for 3 hours, and the speaking part is done via voice recording on the computer, and the test was sent for marking.


The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a patterned test that measures a student’s ability in the English language. The TOEFL test assesses the candidates in four areas — reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Major universities mainly use TOEFL scores as part of the admissions process.

The TOEFL test attempts to test the student’s ability to communicate in English during their academic period. TOEFL is administered by the US-based organization the Education Testing Service, therefore, TOEFL is conducted only in American English.

TOEFL is more likely majorly accepted by American academic institutes. Exam is conducted to judge the student’s ability to understand the English language. The exam tests the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills of the students. TOEFL is a standardised exam for non-English language speakers to get admission in English speaking universities. Professional institutions conduct the test.

TOEFL exam has four sections: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The scoring range of the exam is 0 to 120. The mean score of 80 is considered good. The mean score is derived by adding the scores of each section. The bifurcation of the time for each section along with the number of questions is as follows:

Reading: 60 to 80 minutes, 36-56 questions

Listening: 60 to 90 minutes, 35-51 questions

Speaking: 20 minutes, 6 tasks

Writing: 50 minutes, 2 tasks

The results are mailed within 2 weeks of the exam. The scores are valid for a period of two years and till then can be used for applying to any educational institution. In the TOEFL test, the speaking and writing sections are graded based on how the student performs, including grammar, vocabulary, and writing style TOEFL is graded out of 120 points.

French Language

The Scholastic Assessment Test or SAT is a distinguished admission test. It is required to be given by those candidates who wish to seek admission to undergraduate programs primarily in the USA. SAT scores are used by more than 4,000 undergraduate programs in USA. The SAT exam is conducted four times a year in India, in the months of March, May, October, and December. The test is scheduled for the first Saturday of these months. The new SAT focuses more on the skills and knowledge that you will likely encounter in high schools, college, and in the job aspect.

While undertaking SAT prep, it is important to remember that the test is divided into four sections. These are namely the Reading, Writing and Language, Maths, and an Optional Essay. With a total duration of 3 hours and 45 minutes, students are required to give the exam to the best of their abilities. The process to attain the scores takes between 17-22 calendar days.

GRE – Graduate Record Exam

It is an admission test for graduate or business school. Many graduate/business schools require the students to undertake GRE exams to assess their critical thinking, verbal reasoning, analytical writing, and qualitative reasoning skills. GRE exam helps the graduate or business schools to select the right candidate for their program.

GRE has three modules: analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and qualitative reasoning. It has two formats: GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test. GRE General Test measures the skills of the candidate in the three modules. The GRE Subject Test focuses on determining the skills of the candidate in specific fields.

The scoring of the GRE is as follows:

  • Quantitative Reasoning: 130–170 score scale, with 1-point increment.
  • Verbal Reasoning: 130–170 score scale, with 1-point increment.
  • Analytical Writing: 0–6 score level, with half-point increment


The scores are mailed to the candidate within 10-15 days of the exam. The GRE score has a validity of 5 years. GRE is mostly a computer-based test, but it is conducted in paper format at those centres where the computer-based system is not there. In computer-based GRE test, the students must answer 30 questions within 30 minutes. The paper version of the exam has two sections, each comprising of 30 minutes and 38 questions each.
