The UK and India’s Decision to Recognise Each Other’s Credentials Is Warmly Commended

The mutual recognition of qualifications in this agreement will boost the mobility of students between India and the UK; promote excellence in higher education by enabling academic and research exchanges, cooperation, and inter-institutional credit.

Studying in Britain opens doors around the globe, which is why some of history’s most influential minds have chosen to do so. The UK is estimated to be the study destination of one out of four world leaders. It is, therefore, reasonable to say that the UK is the right place for someone who wants to achieve big things. In addition, the UK’s high training standards and many career opportunities guarantee professional continuity and progress.

Last month in July 2022, another milestone agreement was achieved between India Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom — the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). As a result, both governments will recognize the academic credentials of their citizens. Therefore, Indian universities will now recognize UK A-levels, their equivalents, and undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

In addition, with the Memorandum of Understanding, Indian students will have easier access to higher education and employment in both India and the UK.

This came into light when the admission process to a Ph.D. program in India is challenging for numerous students who have completed a postgraduate degree in the UK. As a result, students tend to apply for a study visa extension to stay longer in the UK. However, let’s face it; many Indians face challenges in finding a high-paying jobs in various institutes and organizations in India, which leads to more students coming to the Uk and working for foreign companies.

The Memorandum of Understanding agreement will allow British and Indian students to live, work, and study more consistently in each other’s countries, making student programs and job opportunities more accessible to them and enabling them to earn the right amount of money.

Memorandum of Understanding covers higher education in Indian universities, including High School Certificates, Pre-University Certificates, Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, and Doctoral Degrees.

Higher education institutions admitting Indian students have exclusive discretion about recognizing and transferring credits in the United Kingdom.

In the same way, the Association of Indian Universities will coordinate recognition and credit transfer of partial and incomplete studies of UK students. This Memorandum of Understanding does not include engineers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lawyers, or architects.

The Department for Education has appointed UK ENIC to implement and monitor the Memorandum of Understanding agreement for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and to address any other issues that may arise. As for any problems that may arise during the implementation and monitoring of the Memorandum of Understanding agreement in India, the Association of Indian Universities is responsible for resolving them.

The result of the Memorandum of Understanding agreement will be a more effortless movement of students between the two countries and a more comprehensive range of university collaborations between them.

Unless terminated by either party, the Memorandum of Understanding is valid for five years. However, a written notice indicating the intention to terminate the Memorandum of Understanding may be sent by either party. Upon receipt of such information by the other party, the termination will be effective within one year.

Over half a million jobs are supported by the UK-India trade relationship under the Memorandum of Understanding, according to the UK Department for International Trade (DIT). As a result, businesses estimate that UK exports of spirits, oats, pork products, and more will increase by approximately 92 million pounds annually under the Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP).

Final Thoughts

As part of the Turing Scheme international education program, an estimated 84,555 Indian students were welcomed to the United Kingdom in 2020–2021.

It is estimated that the UK will gain around 109,000 pounds per person from welcoming students from outside the European Union (EU) with the newly signed MoU, which is expected to make UK universities even more appealing to Indian applicants.
