Quick Answer to Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa
For a Germany student visa, the German missions in India currently ask for compulsory health insurance, statutory or private, from your intended arrival date. Degree students at state or state recognised universities are compulsorily insured in statutory student insurance until the end of the semester in which they turn 30; at TK this cost 141.16 to 146.29 euros a month in 2026, at the time of writing. Going private needs an exemption that cannot be revoked for your studies, while students over 30, language course students and most Studienkolleg students need private cover.
"Public or private, ma'am? My cousin says private is cheaper." This is the question we hear right after a student opens their blocked account. It sounds like a small decision. It is not. The choice you make on health insurance for Germany student visa purposes can follow you for your entire degree, and one version of it cannot be undone.
I want to walk you through it the way I would across the table in our office. What the Mission Asks For: Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa Files
The current checklist for studies on the German missions in India website (last updated 16 February 2026 when we checked) asks for a certificate about compulsory health insurance, either statutory (gesetzliche) or private (private Krankenversicherung), from your intended date of arrival in Germany. That last part matters. Your cover has to start the day you land, not the day your semester starts.
An older PDF version of the checklist asked instead for travel health insurance covering the first 90 days from entry. Always follow the checklist that is live on the mission's site in the week of your appointment.
Why is there a gap? Under section 186 of SGB V, statutory student membership begins with the semester, at the earliest on the day you enrol. If you land in late August for an October semester, those weeks need cover of their own, which is where short term incoming or travel insurance comes in.
So when we talk about health insurance for Germany student visa planning, we are really talking about two layers:
- The arrival layer: cover from the day you enter Germany until your study insurance starts.
- The study layer: statutory student insurance, or private insurance if you are exempt or not eligible, for the whole time you are enrolled.
Ask your insurer exactly which health insurance for Germany student visa confirmation it issues, and check that it starts on your planned arrival day. Our guide to booking a Germany student visa appointment explains how to time your documents around the slot you get.

Public vs Private Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa Holders: The Comparison
Here is the table I sketch for students most often. It compares the three kinds of cover you will hear about while arranging health insurance for Germany student visa paperwork.
| Point | Statutory (public) student insurance | Private insurance | Incoming or travel insurance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | Degree students at state or state recognised universities, generally up to the end of the semester in which they turn 30 | Students over 30, language course students, many Studienkolleg students and those who chose an exemption | The weeks between arrival and the start of study insurance |
| Price logic | Fixed student rate set by law, plus an insurer specific additional contribution | Set by the insurer, depends on the tariff, age and cover chosen | Short term premium for a fixed period |
| Long term care (Pflegeversicherung) | Included in the student contribution | Depends on the policy | Usually not the point of this cover |
| Accepted for enrolment | Yes, the insurer notifies the university electronically | Only with an exemption from statutory insurance, where the law requires one | No. University guidance is clear that travel cover is not enough for studying |
| Can you switch later? | You can move between statutory insurers under their rules | If you were exempted, the exemption cannot be revoked for your studies | Ends on its fixed date |
One honest point: private cover can look cheaper on a quote. But price is only one line when you weigh health insurance for Germany student visa options. The row that matters most is the last one.
What Public Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa Holders Costs
The statutory rate for public health insurance for Germany student visa holders is not a sales offer. It is calculated from a fixed base: the BAföG need rate of 855 euros a month. The figures below are taken from TK's published student contribution table for 2026, at the time of writing.
- Health insurance: 10.22 percent of 855 euros, which is 87.38 euros a month.
- Long term care insurance: 3.6 percent (30.78 euros) if you are under 23, or 4.2 percent (35.91 euros) if you are 23 or older and have no children.
- Additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag): this varies by insurer. At TK it was 2.69 percent, or 23.00 euros a month, for 2026.
At TK, that adds up to 141.16 euros a month for a student under 23 and 146.29 euros for a childless student aged 23 or more. Most Indian master's students fall into the second group. Other statutory insurers differ only by their additional contribution, so check the current figure on the insurer's page before you budget.
Put this monthly amount into your living cost plan alongside rent and food. Our guide to the cost of studying in Germany for Indian students shows where it sits in a realistic monthly budget, and our page on the Germany blocked account explains how much you can withdraw each month to pay for it.

Myths and Facts About Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa Applicants
These are the beliefs about health insurance for Germany student visa cover that we hear most often, usually from a senior or a WhatsApp group.
Myth: "My Indian travel insurance will cover me for the whole course."
Fact: No. Goethe University Frankfurt's guidance for international students states plainly that travel health insurance is not sufficient for studying in Germany. At best, travel or incoming cover bridges the weeks before enrolment.
Myth: "Private is cheaper, so I will take private and switch to public later if I need to."
Fact: If you are under 30 and enrolled, you are compulsorily insured as a student. To go private you apply for an exemption (Befreiung) from a statutory insurer within three months of the start of compulsory insurance. Section 8 of SGB V says the exemption cannot be revoked. In practice that means you stay outside statutory student insurance for the rest of your studies, even if your private premium rises or a claim is refused.
Myth: "Public insurance charges students like employees, based on income."
Fact: Students pay a fixed rate calculated on the BAföG base, not on your blocked account or part time earnings.
Myth: "Student insurance lasts as long as I stay enrolled."
Fact: Under section 190 of SGB V, student membership ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30, unless a recognised reason justifies going beyond that age. Some older university pages also mention a 14 semester limit. The current text of the law ties the limit to age, so ask your insurer how it applies to you.
Myth: "I can sort insurance out after I land."
Fact: The mission wants cover from your arrival date, and universities need your insurance status before they enrol you. Statutory insurers send that status to the university electronically. Leaving it until the last week is the mistake we see most often, and it can hold up your enrolment and your residence permit appointment.
Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa: Which Option Fits Your Profile
This is where the real decision about health insurance for Germany student visa cover happens. Find the description closest to you.
Under 30, admitted to a bachelor's or master's at a state or state recognised university. Statutory student insurance is the default, and for most of you it is the right choice. You pay the fixed student rate, long term care is included, and you are never stuck with a decision you cannot reverse. Arrange incoming cover only for the gap between your arrival and the start of the semester, if the insurer's student cover does not already start on your arrival date.
30 or older when you enrol. The student tariff in statutory insurance is generally not open to you. Most students in this group take private insurance. Compare the cover carefully, not just the price, and keep the policy wording ready for both the mission and the university.
Coming for a German language course first. Language course students are not enrolled at a university, so the statutory student tariff does not apply to them. You will need private insurance for the course period. Goethe University Frankfurt, for example, asks such students for private cover of at least 30,000 euros. If you later enrol in a degree before turning 30, you can usually move into statutory student insurance at that point.
Starting with a Studienkolleg. University guidance we checked treats Studienkolleg students like language course students: private insurance during the preparatory year, then statutory student insurance once you enter the degree programme.
Doctoral candidates. Your situation depends on how you are funded. A PhD with a work contract at a university or institute is usually insured as an employee. A scholarship holder who is not employed often needs private or voluntary cover.
Under 30 but tempted by a cheaper private quote. Ask yourself one question: would you still be happy with this policy in your fourth year, after a hospital visit, with no way back? If the answer is "maybe", stay statutory. For most students under 30, that is the safest health insurance for Germany student visa choice.
If You Choose Private Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa Use, Check These
Sometimes private is the only route, and sometimes it really is the better fit. We do not recommend any particular private company, but before you submit private health insurance for Germany student visa paperwork, check these points.
- Visa acceptance: does the confirmation name you, your passport number, the start date matching your arrival and the cover amounts the mission and your university expect?
- Exclusions: are pre-existing conditions, dental treatment, pregnancy or mental health care excluded or capped?
- Deductibles and limits: how much do you pay yourself per claim, and is there a yearly maximum?
- Exemption impact: if you are under 30 and need an exemption to use this policy, you are accepting that the exemption cannot be revoked for your studies.
When to Arrange Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa Applications
Insurance sits in the middle of your document chain, not at the end. A sensible order looks like this in practice: admission letter, then blocked account, then insurance confirmation, then your appointment. Arrange your health insurance for Germany student visa confirmation once your admission and arrival month are clear, and make sure its start date matches the travel date you write on your application.
Students applying from Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat or Rajkot usually juggle the APS certificate, blocked account and insurance in the same few weeks. If that feels like too many moving parts, a Germany student visa consultant in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot can line them up for you. If you are comfortable with forms and deadlines, you can do all of it yourself. Many students do.

Health Insurance for Germany Student Visa: FAQs
Is travel insurance enough as health insurance for Germany student visa applications?
Not on its own. The current checklist asks for compulsory health insurance from your intended arrival date, and universities say travel cover is not sufficient for studying. Incoming or travel cover can bridge the weeks before your student insurance starts.
How much does public health insurance for Germany student visa holders cost?
At the time of writing, TK's 2026 student rate was 141.16 euros a month under age 23 and 146.29 euros for childless students aged 23 or older, including long term care. Other statutory insurers differ only by their additional contribution, so check the current figure before you pay.
Can I switch from private to public health insurance for Germany student visa purposes later?
If you were exempted from statutory student insurance, no, not for the rest of your studies, because the law says the exemption cannot be revoked. Language course and Studienkolleg students who were never exempted can usually join statutory insurance when they enrol in a degree before turning 30.
Do students over 30 need private health insurance in Germany?
Usually, yes. Statutory student membership ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30, so students who enrol at 30 or older generally take private insurance unless a recognised reason applies.
When should I buy health insurance for Germany student visa submission?
Once your admission and arrival month are fixed, and before your appointment. Make sure the cover starts on the arrival date you give on your application.
