JN Tata Endowment Scholarship and KC Mahindra: The Complete 2027 Guide for Indian Students

Quick Answer to JN Tata Endowment Scholarship and KC Mahindra

The JN Tata Endowment scholarship is a loan scholarship, not a grant, for Indian graduates going abroad for postgraduate study. At the time of writing it offers up to Rs 20 lakh at 2% simple interest, repaid in five equal instalments from the third to the seventh year. The KC Mahindra Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies Abroad is an interest-free loan of up to Rs 5 lakh, or up to Rs 10 lakh for the top 3 fellows. Dates for the 2027 cycle are not yet published: in the latest cycle, JN Tata took applications from 5 January to 29 March 2026 and KC Mahindra closed on 30 April 2026.

"Is the Tata scholarship free, or do I have to pay it back?" Students ask us this early in their funding search, and the honest answer changes how you plan. The JN Tata Endowment scholarship is a loan scholarship. So is its closest cousin, the KC Mahindra Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies Abroad. Both are prestigious, both are cheap compared with a bank, and neither is a gift.

At Global Colliance we see families who assumed otherwise rebuild their budget late. In this post you will get the real terms from the two official websites, jntataendowment.org and kcmet.org, a timeline for the 2027 cycle, and my view on who should apply for which. Amounts are as published at the time of writing, so confirm them on the official sites before you apply. If you want a study abroad consultant to line up admissions and funding together, that is what we do, and I will come back to it at the end.

The JN Tata Endowment Scholarship in One Minute

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata set up the Endowment in 1892 to help Indians study abroad, and it says it has supported over 5,700 students since. It funds postgraduate study overseas: master's degrees, PhDs and postdoctoral fellowships, in any field.

Here are the terms at the time of writing:

  • Amount: up to Rs 20 lakh, though not every candidate receives the maximum.
  • Interest: 2% simple interest per year, and the Trustees may grant an exemption or rebate at their discretion.
  • Repayment: a seven-year agreement, repaid in five equal instalments from the third to the seventh year after disbursement. Early repayment is accepted.
  • Guarantor: usually a parent or guardian, or a spouse if you are married. Their liability is on par with yours.
  • Extras: a selected scholar who accepts the loan becomes eligible for a criteria-based travel grant and gift award from the allied Tata Trusts. No fixed amounts are published, so I never let students count on them in a budget.

Money is released only after you finish the formalities, get your visa and book your flight. That timing matters, as the myths section explains.

Who the JN Tata Endowment Scholarship Is For, and Who Should Look Elsewhere

It suits you if:

  • You are an Indian citizen who was not older than 45 on the Endowment's cut-off date. For the last cycle that was 30 June 2026.
  • You graduated from a recognised Indian university with at least 60% average marks in your undergraduate or postgraduate studies.
  • You are heading abroad for a recognised postgraduate programme. Final-year students and those awaiting results can apply, and so can students who were not selected before.
  • You are already abroad in the first year of a postgraduate course and at least one full academic year will remain when awards are made, which is typically July.

Look elsewhere if: your plan is an exchange semester, a conference, a short training course, an undergraduate degree, or an online or distance postgraduate degree. The Endowment lists all of these as ineligible.

My judgement call: if your average sits below 60%, do not spend weeks on this form. Put that energy into university scholarships instead. If you are comfortably above 60% with a clear subject focus, the JN Tata Endowment scholarship is among the best value money you will find.

JN Tata Endowment Scholarship Timeline for the 2027 Cycle

At the time of writing, dates for the next cycle (courses starting Fall 2027) are not published. The table below shows the latest cycle, for Fall 2026 to Spring 2027 courses, so you can see the pattern.

StageLatest cycle, as published
Application window5 January to 29 March 2026
Mock aptitude test25 April 2026
Final aptitude test27 April 2026
InterviewsApril to June 2026
ResultsBy mid-July 2026

If the pattern repeats, expect the JN Tata Endowment scholarship form to open in early January 2027 and close near the end of March 2027. Have your university shortlist, test scores and a first Statement of Purpose draft ready by December 2026, and apply to universities early because of the admission letter rule below.

Inside the JN Tata Endowment Scholarship Test and Interview

Selection runs in four steps:

  1. Apply online with your academic record, work details if any, documents such as passport and transcripts, and a Statement of Purpose of up to 800 words.
  2. Sit the aptitude test. It is not subject specific; it checks critical thinking and problem solving. A mock test comes first, and results arrive by email within about a week.
  3. Face a subject expert interview, generally online on Microsoft Teams or Zoom. The Endowment says the interview carries the highest weightage.
  4. Complete final selection by mid-July, then submit guarantor and bank details and sign the papers at the Endowment's Mumbai office.

You can apply before you hold an offer, but the Endowment needs your admission letter at least a week before your interview, or the interview does not go ahead. The mistake we see most often is a strong candidate who applied to universities late and had nothing to show at that point.

In the JN Tata Endowment scholarship interview, expect questions on the core of your subject and your specialisation. Students who explain their plans in real depth do better than those who lean on their marks.

What Repayment Really Looks Like: An Illustrative Example

The figures below are illustrative only, not a real student, and they are simplified. Your actual schedule and interest will follow the loan agreement you sign.

Say you are awarded Rs 10 lakh. The JN Tata Endowment scholarship asks for five equal instalments between the third and seventh year after disbursement, so the principal alone is Rs 2 lakh a year across those five years. Interest is 2% simple per year. As a rough ceiling, 2% of Rs 10 lakh is Rs 20,000 a year, far below what a typical bank education loan charges.

An illustrative KC Mahindra award of Rs 5 lakh is interest free, so you repay only what you borrowed. Its FAQs do not publish a repayment schedule, so ask the Trust before you sign.

Both are cheap money, but they still become real obligations while you start your first job. Plan that first salary with repayment in mind. For bank rates and collateral rules to compare against, see our guide to the education loan for study abroad.

KC Mahindra vs JN Tata Endowment Scholarship: Side by Side

The KC Mahindra Education Trust says its postgraduate scholarship was the first it set up and has supported over 1,830 Indian students. For the latest cycle, it required Indian citizenship, a first-class degree or an equivalent diploma, and a postgraduate course abroad starting between August 2026 and February 2027. Final-year students could apply with proof of a first class by the end of June.

KC Mahindra makes at least 50 awards a year, takes applications online with no fee, and, like JN Tata, accepts you before admission is confirmed.

My view: if you meet both sets of rules, apply to both. The deadlines sit about a month apart, and the documents overlap heavily. The JN Tata Endowment scholarship can fund more; KC Mahindra costs you nothing in interest. Before accepting two awards, confirm each trust's current rules on combining funding.

Myths We Hear Every Year

Myth: "The Tata scholarship covers my whole master's."
Fact: the maximum JN Tata Endowment scholarship is Rs 20 lakh and not everyone gets it. For most courses abroad, you will still need other funds.

Myth: "I need an offer letter before I can apply."
Fact: both trusts let you apply first and update them later. JN Tata does need the letter a week before your interview.

Myth: "The award will count as my visa funds."
Fact: results come around July and a JN Tata Endowment scholarship is paid only after your visa, so show funds from other sources first.

Your JN Tata Endowment Scholarship Checklist

Tick these off before the JN Tata Endowment scholarship window opens in January:

  • University applications submitted by late 2026, so offers arrive before interviews.
  • Marksheets and transcripts scanned; check your average against the 60% bar.
  • Statement of Purpose drafted in two lengths: up to 800 words for JN Tata, 500 to 600 for KC Mahindra.
  • A referee lined up for a recommendation letter.
  • Guarantor briefed on what signing means.
  • Reasoning and problem-solving practice for the aptitude test.
  • A backup funding plan that works even if neither award comes through.
