Quick Answer to New Zealand Post Study Work Visa: 7 Clear Rules Indian Students Must Know
The New Zealand post study work visa lets you work after an eligible New Zealand qualification, for up to 3 years. A level 9 master's or doctorate with at least 30 weeks of full-time study gives 3 years of open work; at level 8 or below the visa usually equals your study time. You normally apply within 3 months of your student visa expiring, you can hold it only once, and at the time of writing the fee is from NZD 1,670. From 16 November 2026, level 7 graduate diplomas plus a bachelor's also qualify.
"If I study in New Zealand, can I stay and work after the course?" That is the first question most students ask us about New Zealand, often before they have picked a university. The honest answer is: it depends on what you study, how long you study it, and when you apply. The New Zealand post study work visa can give you up to 3 years of work rights, but the rules sit in the small print of your course choice, not in the visa form.
In this guide I walk you through the current rules as Immigration New Zealand (INZ) publishes them at the time of writing: who qualifies at each qualification level, how long the visa lasts, the 30 week rule, deadlines, cost, what changes from 16 November 2026, and what the visa can and cannot do for residence. How the New Zealand Post Study Work Visa Works
The New Zealand post study work visa (PSWV) lets you stay and work in New Zealand after you finish an eligible qualification there. According to INZ, it can last up to 3 years, depending on the level of your qualification and how long you studied for it.
Three points shape everything else:
- It is based on New Zealand study. You must have gained the qualification in New Zealand, studying full-time there. Online study from India does not count.
- The type of work rights depends on the qualification. With a degree at level 7 or higher, you can do any work, in any job, anywhere in New Zealand, as long as the work is legal and you hold any registration the job needs. With an eligible non-degree qualification at level 7 or below, you must work in a job related to what you studied, and this is written into your visa conditions.
- You only get one. INZ is clear that you can only have this visa once. Anyone who has held a New Zealand post study work visa before cannot get another, even after a higher qualification.
INZ also lists it as a visa that can lead to a resident visa. That is true for some graduates, but it is not automatic. More on that in the timeline section.

New Zealand Post Study Work Visa Eligibility by Qualification Level
New Zealand uses the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF), with levels 1 to 10. Your level decides whether you qualify, how long the New Zealand post study work visa lasts, and what work you can do. This table summarises the INZ rules at the time of writing.

INZ also notes that failing a course, or taking longer than your offer of place says, does not make your visa longer. The length is tied to the study time your education provider confirms.
For the New Zealand post study work visa, the list of eligible non-degree qualifications is short and closely matched to jobs New Zealand needs, such as quantity surveyors, construction project managers, engineering technicians, teachers, automotive electricians and dairy farm roles. If a diploma is not on that list, it does not lead to a New Zealand post study work visa, however good the college's brochure makes it sound.
The 30 Week Rule and the Master's Trap
The single most important number in the New Zealand post study work visa rules is 30 weeks. For a degree at level 7 or higher, you must have studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks.
For master's students, INZ adds a detail that catches people out. You need at least 30 weeks of full-time study while enrolled in the master's programme itself. Transferred credits, cross crediting and recognition of prior learning do not count towards those 30 weeks.
Here is how that plays out. Say you complete a postgraduate diploma over 30 weeks or more, then move straight into a master's using credits from the diploma, and finish the master's in less than 30 weeks. Your master's does not qualify. Since a change INZ announced in November 2024, you can still apply for a New Zealand post study work visa based on the postgraduate diploma, which INZ says may be a 1 year visa, and you get 12 months from the end of your student visa for that first qualification to apply. If you want the 3 year visa, you need the full 30 weeks in the master's.

Your New Zealand Post Study Work Visa Timeline, From Study to Residence
This is how the New Zealand post study work visa journey usually runs, step by step. Dates are general; your own depend on your course and visa.
- Before you apply to study: choose a qualification that fits the table above. For most Indian students that means a bachelor's, a level 9 master's with 30 or more enrolled weeks, or a doctorate. Check the study in New Zealand costs and work rights together, not separately.
- During study: study full-time, pass your papers and keep your enrolment on the qualification recorded on your student visa. INZ warns that if you do not complete that qualification, your application may not be approved.
- When results are out: get your certificate, academic transcript, or a completion letter from your provider.
- Deadline: apply for the New Zealand post study work visa no later than 3 months after your student visa expires. Doctoral graduates get 6 months. If you went straight from an eligible qualification into a higher one that you studied for less than 30 weeks, you get 12 months from the end of the first student visa.
- On the visa: work, build New Zealand experience, and study up to 3 months in any 12 month period if you want a short course. You can be a sole trader or own a business, but you cannot employ other people.
- Next step: many graduates move to an employer-based work visa, such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa. INZ says that if your job is on the Green List and you have the required qualifications, registration or experience, you may be able to get residence immediately or after 2 years of working in New Zealand.
Notice the word "may". The New Zealand post study work visa gives you time and open work rights. Residence depends on the job you get, its pay and occupation, and the rules of the resident visa at that time. Who the New Zealand Post Study Work Visa Suits, and Who It Does Not
It suits you if:
- you are choosing a level 9 master's with at least 30 weeks of enrolled study, or a full bachelor's in New Zealand, and want up to 3 years of open work
- you are in a field where New Zealand employers hire graduates, such as engineering, construction, health, IT or teaching
- you want time to earn New Zealand experience before deciding on residence or returning to India
- you have a partner who wants to work too; INZ says Post Study Work Visa holders can support a partner for a work visa and dependent children for student visas, as long as requirements are met
It is not the right plan if:
- you are looking at a short diploma that is not on the INZ list, expecting 3 years of work afterwards
- you already held a New Zealand post study work visa in the past
- your main goal is guaranteed PR; no study visa route promises that
- you plan to study mostly online or part-time, since the rules need full-time study in New Zealand
From 16 November 2026, graduates with a level 5 to 7 qualification who do not qualify for the New Zealand post study work visa may be able to apply for a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa instead. INZ says it gives 6 months of open work rights, needs at least 24 weeks of full-time study, excludes English language, foundation and bridging qualifications, and must be applied for within 3 months of your student visa expiring. It does not let you support a partner's work visa. Treat it as a short job search window, not a career plan.
New Zealand Post Study Work Visa Cost, Funds and Documents
At the time of writing, INZ lists the New Zealand post study work visa fee as "from NZD 1,670", with 80% of applications processed within 5.5 weeks. Fees and processing times change, so confirm both on the official Immigration New Zealand website before you apply.
For a New Zealand post study work visa application, you will usually need:
- proof of your New Zealand qualification: a copy of the qualification, your academic transcript, or a letter from your provider confirming completion
- bank statements in your name showing at least NZD 5,000 for your living costs; INZ says this applies whether the visa is for 1, 2 or 3 years
- a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand
- police certificates if your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer, unless you gave certificates issued in the last 24 months with an earlier application
- medical certificates or a chest X-ray if INZ asks, depending on your stay and history
For a level 7 graduate diploma application under the November 2026 rules, INZ also asks for a copy of your bachelor's degree certificate and an official transcript. An overseas bachelor's, including one from an Indian university, does not need an International Qualification Assessment for this, although INZ can check that it is genuine.

Myth: Every course in New Zealand gives 3 years of work.
Fact: Master's and doctoral graduates with 30 weeks or more of study get 3 years. At level 8 or below, the visa usually equals your study time, so a one year postgraduate diploma usually means about a year of work rights.
Myth: A one year master's always gives 3 years.
Fact: Only if you studied at least 30 weeks full-time while enrolled in the master's itself. Credits transferred from a diploma do not count.
Myth: If I finish a second qualification, I can get a second PSWV.
Fact: You can only hold the New Zealand post study work visa once, even if your later study is at a higher level.
Myth: I can apply whenever I find a job.
Fact: There is a deadline, normally 3 months after your student visa expires. Miss it and you may lose the option.
Myth: The PSWV leads straight to PR.
Fact: INZ says it can lead to residence, but that depends on the job you get and the resident visa rules. Treat it as a bridge, not a promise.

By then the New Zealand post study work visa outcome is already fixed by the course level and weeks. Reverse the order: decide what work you want, then pick the qualification that leads there.
