Quick Answer to New Zealand Student Visa Funds: 7 Essential Financial Requirements for 2027

New Zealand student visa funds come in three parts: proof of tuition for one year or one course, living costs of NZD 20,000 a year for tertiary study (or NZD 1,667 a month for shorter courses) at the time of writing, and money for an outward ticket on top. INZ checks 3 months of bank history, the source of large deposits, and for applicants from India only immediate family can sponsor or sign a financial undertaking. Indian students may be asked to use the ANZ run Funds Transfer Scheme. Global Colliance reviews funds evidence at its offices in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Delhi.

"Is NZD 20,000 enough, or do we need to show more?" Parents ask us this almost every week once an offer letter from New Zealand arrives. The honest answer is that the living cost figure is only one line in a longer sum. New Zealand student visa funds cover tuition, living costs and a way home, and Immigration New Zealand (INZ) also wants to see where every rupee came from.

This guide goes deep on New Zealand student visa funds only. You will get a comparison table of the figures INZ uses, a worked example with illustrative numbers, a checklist of evidence INZ accepts, a plain explanation of the Funds Transfer Scheme and the mistakes we see most often. New Zealand Student Visa Funds at a Glance

Most Indian students apply for the Fee Paying Student Visa. These are the figures and rules INZ publishes at the time of writing. Amounts for New Zealand student visa funds change, so confirm each one on the official immigration.govt.nz website before you apply.

What you must showFigure or rule at the time of writing
Living costs, tertiary study of 1 year or moreNZD 20,000 for each year
Living costs, tertiary study shorter than 1 yearNZD 1,667 for each month
Living costs, school students (Years 1 to 13)NZD 17,000 a year, or NZD 1,417 a month
TuitionProof you have paid for 1 course or 1 year of study, whichever is shorter
Outward travelA fully paid ticket out of New Zealand, or extra money to buy one, on top of living costs
Prepaid accommodationCan be deducted from the living cost amount

Notice that New Zealand student visa funds sit in three separate buckets: tuition, living costs and travel. INZ does not let one bucket cover another. Money you have already paid to the university does not count towards living costs, and your ticket money must sit on top of the NZD 20,000.

7 Essential Rules Behind New Zealand Student Visa Funds

After many years of preparing files, we find these seven rules explain almost every question INZ raises about New Zealand student visa funds.

  1. The amount is a minimum, not a target. NZD 20,000 a year is what INZ expects you to have for living costs. It is not a budget for Auckland rent, so plan your real spending separately.
  2. Tuition is proved by payment, not by a balance. INZ wants a receipt for one year or one course, whichever is shorter. If you are outside New Zealand, you can instead show the funds are available and use approval in principle, then pay.
  3. Money must be genuinely available to you. A balance in someone else's account only counts when that person is an accepted sponsor or guarantor.
  4. History matters as much as the balance. INZ asks for the last 3 months of bank statements, and fixed deposits should have been held for at least 3 months.
  5. Large deposits need a paper trail. Deposits over NZD 2,000, or many smaller ones, should be explained with supporting documents.
  6. From India, only immediate family can back you. For applicants in South Asia, only your partner, parents, siblings, grandparents or parents-in-law can sponsor you or sign a financial undertaking.
  7. Deadlines are short. Approval in principle letters usually give you 10 days, or 15 days if you use the Funds Transfer Scheme, to complete the conditions.

If you only remember one thing: New Zealand student visa funds are judged on source and history, not just on the final number.

A Worked Example of New Zealand Student Visa Funds

Numbers make New Zealand student visa funds easier to plan. The example below is illustrative only. The tuition and ticket figures are made up for the sum; they are not real fees for any university or airline. Only the living cost figure comes from INZ, at the time of writing.

Illustrative student: a graduate from Vadodara starting a one-year postgraduate programme, paying tuition from family savings, with no prepaid accommodation.

BucketIllustrative figureWhere it comes from
Tuition for year oneNZD 38,000 (illustrative)Your offer of place; paid before or after approval in principle
Living costsNZD 20,000INZ figure for 1 year of tertiary study
Outward ticketNZD 1,500 (illustrative)A paid ticket, or extra funds on top of living costs
Total to plan forNZD 59,500 (illustrative)Convert at the rate on the day you prepare the file

Now change one thing. Say the same student picks a 9 month programme instead. Living costs become 9 months at NZD 1,667, which is NZD 15,003, and tuition covers the whole course because it is shorter than a year. The buckets stay the same; only the arithmetic moves.

Two practical points about New Zealand student visa funds. First, add a margin for exchange rate movement, because a rupee balance that just meets the figure today can fall short when INZ looks at it. Second, if your programme runs beyond one year, INZ's wording is NZD 20,000 for each year of study, so ask INZ or your adviser how much of the later years your file needs to show before you finalise the plan. To see what those years actually cost to live, our guide to the cost of studying in New Zealand for Indian students breaks down rent, food and transport.

Evidence Checklist for New Zealand Student Visa Funds

INZ lists the kinds of evidence it accepts. Use this checklist to match each source of your New Zealand student visa funds to the right document.

  • Savings account: bank statements for the last 3 months, showing the account holder's name.
  • Fixed deposit: deposit certificates, with the deposit held for at least 3 months.
  • Education loan: a sanction or disbursal letter from a nationalised or multinational bank, with security against fixed assets. Keep the repayment plan ready, as INZ can ask for it.
  • Provident fund: evidence of the withdrawal, such as an EPF or GPF statement held with an RBI approved institution.
  • Scholarship: the award letter showing what it covers.
  • Parent or family guarantor in India: a completed Financial Undertaking for a Student form (INZ 1014), with their own bank statements from the previous 3 months or the bank confirmation section of the form. The money must be their own, not borrowed.
  • Source of funds: salary slips with matching bank credits, income tax returns, employment letters or business registration papers.
  • Funds Transfer Scheme: if INZ asks for it in your approval in principle letter, proof that the money is in your ANZ FTS account.
  • Tuition: the official receipt from your education provider.

INZ also says what it will not accept as tuition proof within your New Zealand student visa funds: screenshots of bank transfers and receipts issued by education agents. Get the receipt from the provider itself.

How the Funds Transfer Scheme Works

The Funds Transfer Scheme (FTS) is an INZ scheme run by ANZ Bank New Zealand. It is open to students from China, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, and it gives INZ a secure way to see that the living cost part of your New Zealand student visa funds is really there.

Here is the sequence at the time of writing:

  1. INZ assesses your application and may issue an approval in principle letter with a condition to use the FTS.
  2. You apply to ANZ yourself, as the account holder. ANZ says it will contact you within 3 business days if it needs more information.
  3. You transfer your maintenance funds into the FTS savings account: NZD 20,000 for a year of tertiary study. This does not include tuition, which you pay to your provider separately.
  4. You send INZ the FTS evidence and your tuition receipt before the deadline, usually 15 days for FTS cases.
  5. Once you are in New Zealand, an automatic monthly payment moves money into your everyday account. On a NZD 20,000 deposit, the maximum is NZD 1,666 a month.

If the visa is declined, INZ says to contact ANZ to arrange a refund. Using the FTS does not guarantee approval, but in our experience it makes the living funds part of the file simple for families who have the full amount ready in one place.

Mistakes That Weaken New Zealand Student Visa Funds

The mistake we see most often with New Zealand student visa funds is not a shortfall. It is money that arrives in the account too late or from too many people. Watch for these:

  • Last minute lump sums. A large credit two weeks before you apply, with no explanation, invites questions. Move money early so the 3 month history looks settled.
  • Too many sponsors. INZ in Mumbai has said that files with funds from several friends or non immediate relatives are hard to verify and often not genuinely available. An uncle's balance does not count for applicants from India.
  • Counting the same rupee twice. Money paid as tuition cannot also appear as living costs.
  • Forgetting the ticket. Outward travel money sits on top of living costs, so a balance of exactly NZD 20,000 is short.
  • Loans from the wrong lender. INZ asks for loans from a nationalised or multinational bank with security against fixed assets. Check your lender before you sign.
  • Weak source documents. A healthy balance with no income proof behind it is one of the fastest ways to a request for more information.
  • Missing the approval in principle deadline. Have tuition money ready to send the day the letter arrives.

Each of these is fixable if you spot it early. For a wider view of the documents, medicals and timeline around the money, read our guide to the New Zealand student visa from Gujarat.

When to Get Help and When to File Yourself

If your parents have held savings in one bank for years, your tuition is from the same account and your course follows your degree, your New Zealand student visa funds file is straightforward. You can prepare it yourself using this guide and the INZ checklist.

Help is worth it when your New Zealand student visa funds come from mixed sources: an education loan plus fixed deposits, a family business with irregular income, agricultural income, or a recent property sale. Those files need a clear explanation letter and the right supporting papers in the right order. If you are still comparing universities before you plan funds, our page on study in New Zealand covers universities, costs and work rights.

Global Colliance has almost 20 years of experience helping students from offices in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Delhi. FAQs About New Zealand Student Visa Funds

How much are New Zealand student visa funds for one year?

At the time of writing, INZ asks tertiary students for NZD 20,000 for each year of study for living costs. You also need proof of tuition for one year or one course, and money for an outward ticket, so confirm the current figures on immigration.govt.nz.

Can an education loan count as New Zealand student visa funds?

Yes. INZ accepts a sanction or disbursal letter from a nationalised or multinational bank with security against fixed assets. Keep the repayment plan ready in case INZ asks for it.

Who can sponsor New Zealand student visa funds for an Indian student?

For applicants in South Asia, only immediate family can sponsor you or sign a financial undertaking. That means your partner, parents, siblings, grandparents or parents-in-law.

Is the Funds Transfer Scheme compulsory for Indian students?

Not for everyone. INZ may make it a condition in your approval in principle letter, and if it does, you must deposit NZD 20,000 for a year of tertiary study into an ANZ FTS account at the time of writing.

How long should money sit in the account before I apply?

INZ asks for the last 3 months of bank statements, and fixed deposits should have been held for at least 3 months. Large or recent deposits need an explanation with supporting documents.
