Quick Answer to DAAD Scholarship for Indian Students 2027
The DAAD scholarship for Indian students is a family of German programmes, not one award. For Indian graduates, the main routes are EPOS development-related courses (two years of work experience needed), the Helmut-Schmidt-Programme, Doctoral Programmes in Germany and short Research Grants. At the time of writing, graduates receive 992 euros a month and doctoral candidates 1,400 euros, plus insurance and travel support, but no tuition. Doctoral applications for October 2027 close on 21 October 2026, while EPOS deadlines vary by course.
"Can I get DAAD for my master's in Germany?" We hear this in almost every Germany counselling session, usually right after a student learns that most public universities charge little or no tuition. The honest answer is that the DAAD scholarship for Indian students exists, it pays well, and most master's applicants will never be eligible for it. That is not a reason to skip it. It is a reason to understand it properly before you plan around it.
This guide is for you if you are weighing Germany for 2027. You will learn which DAAD programmes are actually open to Indian applicants, the eligibility rules that filter most people out, the monthly amounts at the time of writing, and a month by month timeline for the 2027 intake. Everything here was checked on daad.de, the DAAD New Delhi site (daad.in) and the DAAD scholarship database, so confirm any figure on the official page before you rely on it.
If you are still deciding whether Germany fits your profile at all, a Germany student visa consultant can check your degree, scores and budget first. A scholarship plan built on the wrong course list rarely survives.
What the DAAD Scholarship for Indian Students Really Is
DAAD is the German Academic Exchange Service. It is not one scholarship but a large family of programmes, each with its own target group, rules and deadline. When people say "the DAAD scholarship for Indian students", they usually mean one of a handful of programmes that the DAAD Regional Office in New Delhi lists for Indian graduates and researchers.
Three facts shape every DAAD scholarship for Indian students:
- DAAD pays a monthly stipend, not tuition. DAAD's own programme pages state that it does not cover tuition fees. At a tuition-free public university, that matters less. At a fee-charging programme, it matters a lot.
- Most funding is for postgraduates with a clear purpose. Doctoral researchers and working professionals in development-related fields are the main target groups for Indian applicants.
- It is highly competitive. A selection committee compares you with strong applicants from India and, for some programmes, from many other countries.

DAAD Scholarship for Indian Students: Which Programmes Are Open to You
When we filtered the DAAD India scholarship database for Indian graduates and DAAD's own programmes at the time of writing, it showed 15 options. Here is each DAAD scholarship for Indian students that matters most to the people we counsel.
| Programme | Who it is for | Where you apply |
|---|---|---|
| Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS) | Working professionals with a bachelor's degree, for selected master's and some doctoral courses | Directly to the university course |
| Helmut-Schmidt-Programme (Public Policy and Good Governance) | Graduates aiming for public policy, governance and related master's courses | Directly to the participating university |
| Doctoral Programmes in Germany | Graduates doing a full PhD in Germany | DAAD portal, to the New Delhi office |
| Research Grants in Germany | Doctoral candidates and postdocs for a short research stay | DAAD portal, to the New Delhi office |
| Study Scholarships in Architecture, Fine Art, Music and Performing Arts | Graduates in these creative fields | DAAD portal |
Notice what is missing. DAAD's general "Study Scholarships: Master Studies for All Academic Disciplines" did not appear in that filtered list for Indian graduates when we checked. So if you are a fresh BTech or BCom graduate planning a regular MS in Computer Science or an MBA, the DAAD scholarship for Indian students is very unlikely to be your funding route. Plan your budget without it.
DAAD Scholarship for Indian Students: Eligibility Rules That Filter Most People
Every DAAD scholarship for Indian students has its own rules, so read the database entry for yours. These are the rules we see catching applicants most often.
EPOS (development-related postgraduate courses)
- A bachelor's degree, typically of four years, with results in the upper third of your class.
- At least two years of professional experience after your bachelor's degree, counted at the time you apply.
- Your degree should normally be no older than six years.
- You must not have lived in Germany for more than 15 months at the deadline.
- English-taught courses set their own language proof. DAAD's EPOS FAQ gives IELTS band 6 or TOEFL iBT 80 as the normal minimum, but your course may ask for more. German-taught courses need B1 at application and DSH 2 or TestDaF 4 before study begins.
- You may apply to a maximum of three EPOS courses, ranked by priority, with one motivation letter explaining the order.
Doctoral Programmes in Germany
- Above-average results and a completed master's degree (in exceptional cases a bachelor's) before funding begins.
- Your most recent degree should be no more than six years old at the deadline, and any doctorate you have started should not be more than three years old.
- Language rules vary by field: arts, social sciences and law usually expect good German, while science and engineering may accept English where it is the working language.
The mistake we see most often is the work experience rule for EPOS. A final-year student sees "master's scholarship", applies, and is rejected on paper. If you graduate in 2026, the earliest EPOS round that realistically fits you is the one after you complete two years of relevant work.

DAAD Scholarship for Indian Students: Monthly Amounts and Extra Benefits
The figures below for each DAAD scholarship for Indian students come from the DAAD database at the time of writing. DAAD reviews its rates, so always confirm on the programme page for your intake.
| Level | Monthly stipend | Other money |
|---|---|---|
| Graduates (master's level, EPOS) | 992 euros | Insurance, travel allowance |
| Doctoral candidates (EPOS) | 1,400 euros from February 2026 (previously 1,300 euros) | Insurance, travel allowance |
| Doctoral Programmes in Germany | 1,400 euros | Research allowance of 460 euros a year, insurance, travel allowance on application |
| Research Grants (short stays) | 1,400 euros | Research allowance of 460 euros and travel allowance for stays over six months |
On top of the stipend, DAAD programmes typically include payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance in Germany. Depending on the programme and your situation, you may also be able to apply for a monthly rent subsidy and allowances for accompanying family members after funding starts.
Two practical points for your visa file. The German Mission in India's student visa checklist lists proof of a German or EU scholarship as an alternative to a blocked account, and scholarship holders funded from German or EU public funds are listed as exempt from the APS certificate. The checklist we read was last updated in September 2024, so check the current version before you rely on either point. If your award does not cover the full amount, you would still need a Germany blocked account for the rest, and most master's applicants will still need the Germany APS certificate.
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Plan Something Else
The DAAD scholarship for Indian students suits you if:
- You have two or more years of relevant work and want a development-related master's, such as urban management, renewable energy, water resources, public health or agricultural economics.
- You want a PhD in Germany and already have, or can realistically get, a German professor's supervision or a place in a structured doctoral programme.
- You are working in public service, policy or social protection and want a governance master's under the Helmut-Schmidt-Programme.
Plan something else if:
- You are a fresh graduate heading for a standard technical master's. Look at university awards and our list of germany scholarships instead.
- Your plan depends on the stipend to make Germany affordable at all. Budget as if you will not get it, then treat any award as a bonus.
- You have already started a master's in Germany. DAAD does not fund a master's programme that has already begun in Germany.
DAAD Scholarship for Indian Students: Timeline for a 2027 Intake
Today is 30 September 2026. Here is what the verified dates mean if you want a DAAD scholarship for Indian students for October 2027.
- Now, early October 2026: Research Grants for short doctoral or postdoc stays have a 7 October deadline through the New Delhi office. Selection is in February, with funding starting from May 2027 at the earliest.
- By 21 October 2026: the deadline for Doctoral Programmes in Germany and bi-nationally supervised (Cotutelle) doctorates for funding starting October 2027. Your supervisor's letter should already be in hand.
- October 2026 onwards: check every EPOS course on the 2027/28 list. DAAD states that deadlines are set per course and published on each course website. If the deadline for your course has passed, DAAD's FAQ is clear that you cannot still apply, so move that course to your 2028 plan.
- Beginning of February 2027: interviews in New Delhi for shortlisted doctoral applicants.
- 4 March 2027: the second Research Grants deadline, with selection in May and funding from July 2027 at the earliest.
- After course selection in 2027: each EPOS course recommends its candidates to DAAD. Recommended applicants upload documents to the DAAD portal, and DAAD makes the final decision. Use the waiting time to prepare your visa file.
- October 2027: most DAAD-funded study and doctoral programmes begin, sometimes earlier if a German language course comes first.
For the Helmut-Schmidt-Programme, the 2027/28 window at the one participating university we checked, Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, ran from 1 June to 31 July 2026. If you missed that type of window, treat 2028 as your target and use the extra year to build relevant experience.
Four Mistakes We See in DAAD Applications
Applying before you qualify. An ineligible file is not read on its merits. Check degree age, work experience and residence rules first.
Sending documents to the wrong place. EPOS and Helmut-Schmidt applications go to the university course. DAAD says it will not forward documents sent to it.
A generic motivation letter. EPOS asks you to explain your course choices, their priority and how you will use the training at home. A letter that could be sent to any university reads weakly next to one that names a real problem in your field.
Ignoring admission. For DAAD study scholarships, the award only works if you are admitted to the course named in your application. Some universities use uni-assist application steps that take weeks, so start them early.
