My answer is always the same: for the Germany winter intake 2027, the deadlines you can see are only half the story. The other half is the queue in front of them, the APS check, a new test for many master's applicants, uni-assist's evaluation and a visa process the German missions themselves say may take several months.

This guide gives you the whole year in one place. Germany Winter Intake 2027 Timeline: October 2026 to October 2027

The German winter semester runs from 1 October to 31 March. Lectures start a little later: TUM's calendar for winter semester 2027/28 shows lectures beginning on 18 October 2027. Work backwards from that and the Germany winter intake 2027 looks like this.

October 2026: Decide, shortlist and check the dMAT rule

• Decide whether you want an English-taught or German-taught programme. The DAAD's international programmes database is a good starting point for a shortlist of eight to ten courses.
• If you are applying for a master's with a degree in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management, read the dMAT section below this week. It changes your Germany winter intake 2027 calendar more than anything else.

November to December 2026: Start the APS and gather documents

• RWTH Aachen's deadline for non-EU applicants to its open admission master's programmes is 1 March for the winter semester. For the Germany winter intake 2027, that means finishing your RWTH file in February.
• Create your uni-assist account if any university on your list uses it.

March to April 2027: Main application season begins

• Many TUM and TU Berlin master's windows open on 1 April.

May to June 2027: Deadlines and your appointment

July 2027: Admissions and the 15 July line

• Accept your offer, fund your blocked account and attend your visa appointment with a complete file.

August to September 2027: Visa decision and travel

• Wait for the decision. The missions do not answer status enquiries in the first three months after you file, which is why late files are risky.
• Book accommodation and flights once your visa is in hand.

October 2027: Arrival and enrolment

• The semester starts on 1 October. Register your address, activate your blocked account payouts and enrol by your university's deadline.

Germany Winter Intake 2027 Deadlines at TUM, RWTH and TU Berlin

There is no single national deadline. Each university, and often each programme, sets its own. Here is what three popular universities publish. Where the 2027 dates are not out yet, I have shown the most recent cycle, so treat those as a guide and check again in early 2027.

The pattern is clear. For the Germany winter intake 2027, the famous 15 July date is the latest you will see, not the one to plan around. Most of the English-taught master's courses Indian students want close in spring. The APS and dMAT Step Most Students Underestimate

Most Indian students need an APS certificate for both the university application and the visa. Our full guide to the Germany APS certificate explains the process. For this intake, there is one new layer.

APS India now asks selected master's applicants to submit a digital Master Test (dMAT) certificate. It applies to applications for the summer semester 2027 intake and later, so it covers the Germany winter intake 2027. You are affected if your previous degree is in:

• Engineering
• Commerce, accounting, finance or economics
• Business or management

The dMAT is run by g.a.s.t., and APS India still does the document verification. At the time of writing, the fee is EUR 150, paid at registration. The most recent test date listed was 26 September 2026, with certificates online from 12 October 2026. APS India says it can only issue your APS certificate after your dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.

Here is my practical advice. If you are in one of these subject groups, find the next dMAT date on the official dMAT and APS India sites today and register for it. Submit your APS documents in parallel. The mistake we see most often is students treating the APS as a formality they can finish in March. • By April 2027: APS certificate received, uni-assist applications submitted at least 8 weeks before each deadline.
• By May 2027: all direct university applications in, visa appointment secured, blocked account provider chosen.
• By July 2027: admission accepted, blocked account funded, health insurance arranged, complete visa file submitted.
• By September 2027: visa received, accommodation and flights booked.

Summer 2027 Instead, or Too Late? An Honest Check

Germany also has a summer semester that starts in April. uni-assist says the deadline for many courses is often 15 January, although fewer English-taught master's programmes start in summer. So who should think about it?

Aim for summer 2027 if: you already have your APS certificate (or are outside the dMAT subject groups and can get it quickly), your language score is ready now, and your target programme genuinely offers a summer start. For most students reading this in October 2026, that is a short list.

Stay with the Germany winter intake 2027 if: you are starting from zero this month, need the dMAT, or want the widest choice of programmes. October 2026 is a comfortable start for winter.

You are probably too late for winter 2027 if: you only begin your APS in spring 2027 and your subject needs the dMAT, or your language score will not be ready before May. In that case, a strong application for summer 2028 or winter 2028 is better than a rushed one now. A refused visa or a weak first application does not help your next attempt.
