Quick Answer to Ireland Stamp 1G Visa Explained: 7 Essential Facts for Indian Students

The Ireland Stamp 1G visa is a graduate permission under the Third Level Graduate Programme. A non-EEA student with a Stamp 2 and a Level 8 award from a recognised Irish body can get up to 12 months, and a Level 9 or higher graduate up to 24 months, granted as 12 plus 12. You apply within six months of written notice of your award, through the online renewals portal. You can work full time but cannot be self-employed, and it cannot be extended, so a Critical Skills or General Employment Permit must be arranged before it ends. Confirm current rules and fees with Irish Immigration.

"I finish my master's in Dublin next year. Can I stay and work, or do I have to fly home the day my course ends?" Students ask us this before they even choose an Irish university, and it is the right question to ask early. The short answer is the Ireland Stamp 1G visa. This guide explains who qualifies, how long it lasts, how to apply, what you can and cannot do on it, and what to plan before it runs out.

If you are still deciding between countries, our Europe student visa consultant page shows how we help students compare options. And if Ireland is already on your shortlist, start with our overview of why study in Ireland.

What the Ireland Stamp 1G Visa Actually Is

Strictly speaking, the Ireland Stamp 1G visa is not a visa at all. It is an immigration permission, shown as "Stamp 1G" on your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card, issued under the Third Level Graduate Programme. Students and agents call it the stay back visa, and that is the name people search for, so we use it here too.

The purpose, according to the Irish immigration authorities, is to let non-EEA graduates of Irish institutions remain in Ireland after their studies to look for graduate level employment and to apply for an employment permit. While you hold it, you can work full time for any employer, and employers do not need to sponsor you with an employment permit during that period.

Note the order of events. You do not apply for the Ireland Stamp 1G visa from India. You are already in Ireland on a student permission (Stamp 2), you finish your course, and then you switch.

Who Qualifies for the Ireland Stamp 1G Visa

The official notice on the Irish Immigration website sets out the conditions. At the time of writing, you generally need all of the following:

  • An award at Level 8 or above on Ireland's National Framework of Qualifications, from a recognised Irish awarding body. A Level 8 award is a bachelor's degree; a Level 9 award is a master's degree.
  • A current Stamp 2 student permission and an up to date IRP card.
  • An application made within six months of being notified in writing that you achieved the award.
  • Time left on the overall limit for student permissions: seven years for Level 8 graduates and eight years for Level 9 and above.
  • A clean record. Applicants are expected to comply with Irish law and not to have come to the adverse attention of the authorities.

Two further points catch people out. First, an application will not be accepted if your permission to be in the State has already lapsed, so never let your Stamp 2 expire while you wait for results. Second, the official notice says a graduate cannot use the programme on more than two separate occasions. A student who does a Level 8 degree and then a Level 9 degree can use it again, within the overall limit.

How Long the Ireland Stamp 1G Visa Lasts: 12 or 24 Months

The length depends on your qualification level, and this is where most online summaries get sloppy.

Your Irish awardIreland Stamp 1G visa lengthOverall student-time limit
Level 8 (bachelor's degree)Up to 12 months7 years
Level 9 or above (master's, PhD)Up to 24 months, granted as 12 months first and then 12 more8 years

For a master's graduate, the second year is not automatic. The official notice says the permission is renewed for a further 12 months where you can show you have taken real steps to find graduate level work, such as attending interviews or registering with graduate recruitment agencies. Keep a simple folder of applications, interview invitations and recruiter emails from day one.

For Indian students choosing between a one year taught master's and a longer course, this matters. Level 9 gives you the longer runway, which is one reason so many of our counsellors steer students towards a master's in Ireland when work experience is the goal. Ireland Stamp 1G Visa: Myth Versus Fact

These are the beliefs we correct most often when families come to our offices.

MythFact
Every graduate gets two years.Only Level 9 and above can reach 24 months, and the second 12 months depend on evidence of a genuine job search. Level 8 graduates get up to 12 months.
I need an employer to sponsor me before I can apply.No. You apply on the basis of your Irish award, and employers do not need a work permit for you while you hold Stamp 1G.
I can start my own business on it.The official notice says Stamp 1G holders are not permitted to operate a business or be self-employed.
I can extend it if I have not found a job.The permission ends at its maximum. If you have no employment permit or other permission by then, you are expected to leave Ireland.
I can apply any time after graduation. The window is six months from the date you are notified of your award, and your Stamp 2 must still be valid.

None of these is hard to avoid once you know it. The expensive mistakes come from learning the rule after the date has passed.

How to Apply for the Ireland Stamp 1G Visa

The Irish Immigration Service says renewals, including a move from a Stamp 2 student permission to a Stamp 1G graduate permission, are made through its online renewals portal, and that all documents must be uploaded before you submit. The exact screens change, so use the official website as your final guide. The sequence below is what we advise students to follow.

  1. Get written proof of your award. The official notice accepts a letter from your college confirming the award, or your degree scroll.
  2. Note the date of that notification. Your six month clock starts then, not on your convocation day.
  3. Check your Stamp 2 expiry. If it ends before your results, renew your student permission first.
  4. Collect your documents. Typically a valid passport, your IRP card, your award letter or transcript, and proof of private medical insurance, which universities advise is needed. Confirm the exact list on the portal.
  5. Submit online and pay the fee. At the time of writing, Irish universities quote a registration fee of EUR 300. Confirm it on the official site before paying.
  6. Collect your new IRP card. Your Ireland Stamp 1G visa is only in force once the new card shows Stamp 1G.

Processing times vary through the year, so apply as early as your eligibility allows rather than at the end of the window.

Working on the Ireland Stamp 1G Visa

This is the real advantage over a student permission. On Stamp 2, your work hours are capped. On the Ireland Stamp 1G visa you can work full time under Irish employment law, in any sector, and employers can hire you without an employment permit. Many graduates use this period to move from a temporary job into a role that actually fits their degree.

Here is our practical judgement. If your profile is a master's in a field with steady hiring, such as data, cyber security, pharma or finance, treat the first three months after the award as a focused job search, not a rest. If your profile is a Level 8 degree with only 12 months, the clock is shorter, so begin applications before your final exams. Employers and recruiters also need to understand your status, so state clearly on your CV that you hold Stamp 1G and can work full time.

Planning Beyond the Ireland Stamp 1G Visa

Stamp 1G is a bridge, not a destination. The programme's own purpose is to help graduates find work and apply for an employment permit, usually the General Employment Permit or the Critical Skills Employment Permit. The Critical Skills route is meant for roles on the highly skilled occupations list that meet a salary threshold, and the Irish authorities say they have regard to those lists and thresholds when judging your job search.

Here is an illustrative timeline, with invented figures to show the shape, not a promise for any real case:

  • Month 0: your college tells you in writing that you passed your master's.
  • Month 1: you submit the online application with the award letter and insurance proof.
  • Months 2 to 12: you work full time and keep a record of your job search.
  • Month 10: if you have a job offer in a skilled role, your employer applies for the employment permit.
  • Month 12: a Level 9 graduate shows evidence of the search and renews for the second year.
  • Month 24: the Ireland Stamp 1G visa ends, so the employment permit must already be in place.

Employers' permit applications take time, so do not leave them until the final weeks. Salary thresholds and occupation lists change, so check the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment pages for current figures. We do not quote them here because they are revised.

Common Ireland Stamp 1G Visa Mistakes to Avoid

The mistake we see most often is waiting for the convocation ceremony before applying. The clock runs from the written notification of your award, so a convocation months later can leave you with little time. The second is letting a Stamp 2 lapse during a delay in results. The third is assuming a part-time job from your student days will transfer into a graduate role without a fresh conversation with the employer.

Also avoid planning an Irish study route that quietly breaks the limits. Years spent on student permissions count towards the seven or eight year cap, so a long chain of courses can use up your Ireland Stamp 1G visa time. Our guides on the Ireland student visa process and the documents required for an Ireland student visa cover the starting point, and our list of best Ireland universities helps you pick a course with the end in mind.
