Quick Answer to PTE Academic vs PTE Core: 6 Essential Differences for Your Study Visa
PTE Academic is the test universities and student visa offices recognise, including Australia and New Zealand, while PTE Core is built for Canadian immigration through IRCC and is not used for Canadian college admission. UK visas that need a Secure English Language Test use PTE Academic UKVI, though degree level universities can assess English themselves. Scores are valid for two years, so confirm the test name and minimum score with your university and the official source before booking.
"Should I book PTE Academic or PTE Core? The centre says both are PTE." We hear this from students who have already paid for coaching and are about to pay for the wrong exam. It is an easy mistake, because the two tests look almost identical on the booking page. The names are close, the format is similar and both come from Pearson. The PTE Academic vs PTE Core choice looks small, but it decides whether your score counts.
Below I explain PTE Academic vs PTE Core in plain terms: what each test is for, which one a student visa for Australia, the UK, Canada or New Zealand actually uses, a quick decision table, a myth versus fact section and a short checklist to run before you book. If you are still choosing between PTE and IELTS, read our guide on PTE vs IELTS first.
If you are preparing in Gujarat or Delhi, our PTE coaching classes in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Delhi teach the test you actually need, not just the one that is easiest to sell.
PTE Academic vs PTE Core: The Short Answer
For study abroad, the answer is almost always PTE Academic. According to Pearson, PTE Academic is the test accepted by more than 4,000 universities and colleges worldwide, and it is recognised by the Australian Department of Home Affairs and Immigration New Zealand. PTE Core, on the other hand, is built for Canadian immigration through IRCC: permanent residency, citizenship and some work permit steps.
On Pearson's own PTE Core page the point is stated plainly on its own PTE Core page: if you plan to apply to a Canadian university or college, you need PTE Academic, not PTE Core. So the PTE Academic vs PTE Core question is really a question about your goal. A student visa and admission means Academic. A Canadian PR or citizenship file means Core.
That is the whole PTE Academic vs PTE Core story in one line. The one extra wrinkle is the UK, where a third version, PTE Academic UKVI, exists. We cover it below.

How PTE Academic vs PTE Core Differ in Format
Both tests are computer based, both take about two hours, and both score Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. Results usually arrive within two business days according to Pearson, and scores stay valid for two years. The difference is in the content and the length of each part.
| Point | PTE Academic | PTE Core |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | University admission, student visas, some work and migration visas | Canadian immigration through IRCC |
| Speaking and Writing | 76 to 84 minutes | 50 to 65 minutes |
| Reading | 23 to 30 minutes | 27 to 37 minutes |
| Listening | 31 to 39 minutes | 22 to 37 minutes |
| Language style | Academic, lecture and journal style | Everyday and workplace English |
| Student visa use | Yes, where PTE is accepted | Not for student visas or admissions |
Timings are from Pearson's own pages at the time of writing and can change, so check pearsonpte.com before you book. The practical point is this. When students compare PTE Academic vs PTE Core, they sometimes hear that Core is "shorter and easier" and move to it. That is a trap. A shorter Speaking and Writing section does not help you if the visa office or university will not accept the score.
Which Test Each Student Visa Accepts: PTE Academic vs PTE Core
This is where students lose money, so go country by country and test the PTE Academic vs PTE Core question against each visa.
Australia. PTE Academic is the PTE test recognised for Australian visas, including the student visa subclass 500. Pearson notes that Home Affairs last updated its score requirements on 7 August 2025, so look up the exact minimum on the Home Affairs website, because the number depends on your course and whether an English course is packaged with it. PTE Core is not listed for Australian visas. Our Australia student visa process guide shows where the English evidence fits in the file, and our Australia student visa consultant team can check your score against your course before you apply.
United Kingdom. GOV.UK says that if you do not have qualifications that prove your English, you need a Secure English Language Test, a SELT. The approved list includes PTE Academic UKVI from Pearson. For courses at degree level or above, your university can also assess your English itself, to the equivalent of CEFR level B2. In that case the university decides which tests it will take, and many accept standard PTE Academic. The safest approach is to ask the university in writing and then book the matching version. PTE Core is not part of this picture.
Canada. Here the PTE Academic vs PTE Core confusion is worst, because Core is a Canadian test. But Core is for IRCC immigration programmes, not for getting into a college. The IRCC list of study permit documents does not ask for a language test at all. Instead, your college or university sets its own English rule, and Pearson says that for admission you need PTE Academic. Core becomes useful later, if you move towards permanent residence.
New Zealand. Pearson states that Immigration New Zealand accepts PTE Academic for the visa categories that need an English test. Check the current score on the Immigration New Zealand site and with your institution.
Who Should Take PTE Academic, and Who Should Take PTE Core
Here is how we sort students on the PTE Academic vs PTE Core question in a counselling session.
Take PTE Academic if:
- You are applying for a bachelor's or master's course in Australia, the UK, Canada, New Zealand or another country that takes PTE.
- Your university or visa office asks for PTE Academic by name.
- You want one score you can use for admission and, in Australia and New Zealand, visa evidence.
Take PTE Core if:
- You are already in Canada, or planning a Canadian immigration application, and IRCC asks for an approved English test.
- You are past the study stage and your goal is PR or citizenship.
Take PTE Academic UKVI if:
- Your UK university or sponsor says a SELT is required, for example for a course below degree level or where it does not assess English itself.
If your profile looks like a typical Gujarat student heading to a master's abroad, the PTE Academic vs PTE Core decision is simple: PTE Academic, unless the university tells you in writing to take the UKVI version. If you are unsure which test fits your country shortlist, our PTE score for Canada and Australia guide compares the typical score targets.

PTE Academic vs PTE Core: Myths and Facts
Myth: PTE Core is the same exam with a cheaper name.
Fact: The two tests are separate products with different content and different accepting bodies. A Core score cannot be swapped for an Academic score.
Myth: PTE Core is easier, so I should take it for my student visa.
Fact: Whether it feels easier does not matter, because it is not the test accepted for student visas or university applications. You would book, pay and prepare for a score that no one will read.
Myth: Every PTE score works for the UK.
Fact: A UK visa that needs a SELT needs the UKVI version from an approved provider. Degree level applicants may avoid the SELT if the university assesses English itself, but only the university can confirm that.
Myth: A score is valid for as long as I like.
Fact: Pearson says PTE scores remain valid for two years, and GOV.UK gives the same two years for SELT results. If your intake is far away, book the test so the score is still valid on your application date.
Myth: Coaching for PTE Academic wastes time if I later need PTE Core.
Fact: Core and Academic share the same four skills and the same style of tasks, so your speaking and writing practice carries over. You would only need to learn the differences in timing and content before sitting Core. For help with common errors, see common PTE mistakes.
Checklist Before You Book PTE Academic vs PTE Core
Run through these five steps in order before you settle PTE Academic vs PTE Core. It takes about an hour and can save you the cost of a second test.
- Name your visa and country. Australia, UK, Canada and New Zealand each treat English evidence differently.
- Read your offer letter. Look for the exact test name and minimum scores your course asks for, including each skill.
- Ask the university about the UKVI version. For UK study, ask whether it assesses English itself or wants a SELT.
- Check the official source. Use pearsonpte.com, GOV.UK, the Australian Home Affairs site, IRCC or Immigration New Zealand. Do not rely on a forwarded message or a friend's experience.
- Count back from your application date. Make sure the score will still be inside its two-year validity.
One more tip from the classroom: mock tests should use the same format you will sit. Our PTE or IELTS comparison explains how score types differ, which is useful if you move between exams.
PTE Academic vs PTE Core and Your Next Steps
For most students reading this, the PTE Academic vs PTE Core decision ends in one booking, and the next step is PTE Academic, or PTE Academic UKVI if your UK university asks for it. Before that, confirm the score you need, because the minimum depends on the course and the country. Once you have a score target, work back from your intake. Most students need a few weeks of structured practice plus a buffer for a retake, and it is far cheaper to leave that buffer than to miss an offer deadline.

PTE Academic vs PTE Core FAQs
Is PTE Academic vs PTE Core a big difference for a student visa?
Yes. PTE Academic is the test universities and student visa offices recognise, while PTE Core is designed for Canadian immigration through IRCC. Mixing up PTE Academic vs PTE Core for a student visa file is the most common and costly mistake.
In PTE Academic vs PTE Core, can I use Core for a Canadian study permit?
No. Pearson says that for a Canadian university or college you need PTE Academic, not PTE Core, and the IRCC study permit document list does not itself ask for a language test. Check your college's own English requirement.
Which PTE test does Australia accept in the PTE Academic vs PTE Core choice?
Australia recognises PTE Academic for visa purposes, including the student visa. Pearson lists PTE Core for Canadian immigration only, so check the current minimum score on the Home Affairs website.
In PTE Academic vs PTE Core, do I need the UKVI version for a UK student visa?
Not always. GOV.UK says degree level students can have their English assessed by the university, but a SELT such as PTE Academic UKVI is needed when the university or course requires one. Ask your university which route applies to you.
How long is a PTE score valid?
Pearson states that PTE scores are valid for two years, and GOV.UK also gives two years for SELT results. Plan your test date so the score is still valid when you apply.
