Quick Answer to ATAS Certificate for UK Masters

An ATAS certificate is free FCDO security clearance needed before a UK Student visa application for certain postgraduate courses. Indian nationals are not exempt. For taught masters it covers only a short list of CAH3 subjects such as Mechanical, Aerospace and Chemical Engineering, Physics and Materials Science; research degrees cover many more. Processing takes at least 30 working days, longer from April to August, and the certificate is valid for 6 months for visa use.

"My offer letter mentions ATAS. Is that another test, another fee, or something I can ignore?" We hear this every intake from students heading to the UK for a masters in engineering or physics. The short answer: it is not a test, it costs nothing, and you cannot ignore it if your course needs it. An ATAS certificate is a security clearance from the UK government, and without one your Student visa application is not complete. In this guide I will show you whether you need one as an Indian student, which subjects are covered, how to fill in the form, and how to fit the wait around your CAS and visa dates.

If you are still getting familiar with the wider UK student visa process, read that first. ATAS is one small piece of it, but it is the piece students most often start too late.

What an ATAS Certificate Is and Why the UK Asks for It

ATAS stands for the Academic Technology Approval Scheme. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) runs it and issues every ATAS certificate. According to the Immigration Rules, the scheme exists to stop knowledge in sensitive fields from reaching programmes linked to advanced military technology or weapons of mass destruction.

Before issuing an ATAS certificate, the FCDO looks at who you are, what you have studied, who is funding you and exactly what you will learn in the UK. It is a background check, not an exam, and the problems we see come from starting late or giving vague answers.

Here are the seven facts that matter most, at the time of writing:

  1. Indian nationals are not on the exempt list, so the rule applies to you if your course is covered.
  2. It only applies to postgraduate study and research in listed subjects, identified by a CAH3 code.
  3. For a taught masters, only a short list of subjects is covered. The research list is much longer.
  4. There is no fee to apply.
  5. Processing takes at least 30 working days (6 weeks), with no fast track, and longer from April to August.
  6. You must hold the ATAS certificate before you apply for your Student visa, and it is valid for 6 months for visa use from its date of issue.
  7. You need a new one if your course content, supervisor or end date changes in certain ways.

Who Needs an ATAS Certificate, and Who Does Not

Two things decide whether you need an ATAS certificate: your nationality and your course. Both have to point to yes.

Nationality. Appendix ATAS of the Immigration Rules exempts nationals of 38 countries: Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, the United States, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the EU countries on the list. India is not on it. If you hold dual nationality and one passport is from an exempt country, GOV.UK says you are exempt, as long as you use that passport and your UK visa is linked to it.

Course. Appendix ATAS applies when your course, in a listed subject, leads to a masters degree, a PhD, another postgraduate qualification, or is part of an overseas postgraduate qualification. The FCDO guidance adds that some undergraduate courses with an integrated masters year can also need clearance, and your university will confirm this.

You probably need an ATAS certificate ifYou probably do not if
You hold an Indian passport onlyYou also hold a passport from an exempt country and use it for your visa
Your taught masters is in a listed subject such as Mechanical Engineering or PhysicsYour taught masters is in a subject outside the list, such as an MBA or most business courses
You are doing a PhD or masters by research in a listed fieldYou are studying a postgraduate diploma or PGCE, which GOV.UK says do not need ATAS
Your university's offer letter or CAS flags ATASYou have Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK

The simplest way to see if you need an ATAS certificate is your offer letter. GOV.UK says your university will typically print the CAH3 code there, or confirm it separately, and the Sponsorship Management System has a tick box on the CAS for courses that need ATAS.

Subjects That Need an ATAS Certificate for a Taught Masters

This is where students get confused. Appendix ATAS has two lists: a long one for research, doctorates and masters by research, and a short one for taught masters. At the time of writing, a taught masters needs an ATAS certificate only for these CAH3 codes:

CAH3 codeSubjectTaught mastersResearch or PhD
CAH10-01-02Mechanical EngineeringYesYes
CAH10-01-04Aeronautical and Aerospace EngineeringYesYes
CAH10-01-09Chemical, Process and Energy EngineeringYesYes
CAH07-01-01Physics (including Nuclear Physics)YesYes
CAH10-03-07Materials ScienceYesYes
CAH10-03-01Minerals TechnologyYesYes
CAH10-03-02Materials TechnologyYesYes
CAH11-01-01Computer ScienceNoYes
CAH11-01-05Artificial IntelligenceNoYes
CAH10-01-08Electrical and Electronic EngineeringNoYes
CAH10-01-07Civil EngineeringNoYes
CAH07-02-01ChemistryNoYes

The research list also includes mathematics, software engineering, information technology, biological sciences, pharmacy, biotechnology and more. So a taught MSc coded as Computer Science does not need an ATAS certificate, but a PhD in the same field does.

One word of caution: the course title is not what counts, the CAH3 code is. An MSc called "Advanced Engineering" might be coded as Mechanical Engineering, and then you need an ATAS certificate. Go by your university's confirmation, not your own guess. If you are still choosing a course, our guide to studying masters in the UK covers the wider decision.

How to Apply for an ATAS Certificate: Step by Step

You apply online on the FCDO's ATAS service. There is no fee, and nobody needs to pay anyone to "speed it up", because GOV.UK states there is no fast track. Here is the order we follow with students:

  1. Get your CAH3 code. Take it from your offer letter, or ask the admissions team in writing.
  2. Collect your module list. For a taught course, the form asks you to list all elective or optional modules available to you, or the core modules if there are no options. Copy them from the official course page so they match what the university has agreed.
  3. Create your account. Use a non-Gmail email address. At the time of writing, GOV.UK warns against Gmail because of an ongoing technical issue with the ATAS system.
  4. Fill in your details. Full name, date of birth, current address and the passport you will use for your visa.
  5. Add your history. Previous studies, any employment (or "not applicable / never employed"), an explanation for gaps, and any published papers.
  6. Name two referees. Ideally people who have known you for over three years: one from your home country and one academic. Use full first names and surnames, not initials.
  7. Explain your funding. Say who is paying for your studies in the UK. If you are waiting on a scholarship or loan decision, say so.
  8. Write your personal statement. Keep it specific: why this course, how it builds on your degree, what you plan to do after.
  9. Check, then submit. After submission you can only change your email, phone number and marital status.

The outcome comes by email, and the FCDO also tells your university, so check your spam folder. When the ATAS certificate arrives, make sure its course and university details match your offer before you upload it.

A note on honesty: GOV.UK now says you may use AI tools to tidy your wording, but not to invent or change facts. False or unverifiable information gets an ATAS certificate application refused, even if an agent filled in the form for you.

ATAS Certificate, CAS and Visa: A Working Timeline

The ATAS certificate sits between your offer and your visa. GOV.UK says you must get it before you apply for a Student visa, so a late ATAS application pushes everything else back. From outside the UK, the earliest you can apply for the visa is 6 months before your course starts.

Here is how the months usually line up for a September start. Treat the timings as a planning guide, not official deadlines:

WhenWhat happens
As soon as you accept your offerConfirm the CAH3 code and whether ATAS applies. Submit the ATAS application the same week if it does.
Next 6 to 8 weeks or moreATAS processing, at least 30 working days, often longer between April and August
MeanwhileMeet offer conditions, pay any deposit, arrange funds and your TB test
After your CAS arrivesCheck the CAS details, including the ATAS field
Up to 6 months before the courseApply for the Student visa, uploading the ATAS certificate

Watch the validity window. Your ATAS certificate is valid for 6 months from its date of issue for use in a visa application. If you get clearance very early and then delay your visa application, it could lapse before you use it. For September intakes, that is rarely a problem. For students who defer, it can be.

For the full list of dates and documents, see our UK student visa timeline, and our explainer on the CAS letter for the UK shows what else to check on your CAS.

Mistakes That Slow Students Down

The mistake we see most often is waiting for the CAS before applying for the ATAS certificate. The two are separate, and you can apply once you have your course details and CAH3 code. Other patterns we see:

  • Guessing the subject. Students assume a data or AI course is covered, or that an engineering course is not. Ask the university.
  • Copying a friend's personal statement. The FCDO checks answers against academic and official records.
  • Leaving gaps unexplained. If you took a year out, say what you did. Unexplained inconsistencies can be treated as false information.
  • Duplicate applications. The system rejects a second application with the same passport, date of birth, CAH3 code and university while the first is still open. If you hold offers from two universities, you can apply for each, one after the other.

When Your ATAS Certificate Needs Replacing, or Is Refused

Once issued, the ATAS certificate lasts for your whole course as long as your UK visa stays valid. There are a few situations where you need a new one:

  • your course end date is delayed by more than 3 months;
  • your course content or research proposal changes;
  • your primary supervisor changes;
  • your visa expires during the course, for example while you are writing up a thesis, in which case you reapply for both ATAS and the visa.

Appendix ATAS says a continuing student must apply for the new certificate within 28 days of learning about the change. If you are in the UK and switch course, you still need clearance for the new course before you start it.

If your ATAS application is refused, GOV.UK says you must wait 90 days before reapplying for the same course at the same university with the same CAH3 code. You can apply straight away for a different course or research area, or at a different university, and you can ask for an appeal by emailing the ATAS team at ATAS@fcdo.gov.uk. Without an ATAS certificate you cannot start a course that requires one, so a refusal in July can cost you the September intake.

Get Your Plan Checked Before You Apply

The ATAS certificate is free and many students handle the form well on their own. Where we help is the planning around it: reading your offer, confirming the CAH3 code, lining up ATAS, CAS, funds and visa dates, and checking your statement against your record. Our UK student visa consultant team works with students across Gujarat on exactly this.

Global Colliance has guided students for almost 20 years from offices in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Delhi. If your UK masters offer has just arrived and you want a clear plan for the next few months, talk to our counsellors in a free session.

FAQs About the ATAS Certificate

Do Indian students need an ATAS certificate for a UK masters?

Only if the course is in a subject covered by Appendix ATAS. India is not an exempt country, so an Indian student on a covered course, such as a taught MSc in Mechanical Engineering or Physics, needs clearance before applying for the visa.

How much does an ATAS certificate cost?

Nothing. GOV.UK states that you do not pay for the ATAS application. Be wary of anyone charging a fee to speed it up, because there is no fast track service.

How long does it take to get an ATAS certificate?

GOV.UK says applications take at least 30 working days, about 6 weeks, and complex cases can take longer. More people apply from April to August, so allow extra time then.

Is an ATAS certificate needed for a taught MSc in Computer Science?

At the time of writing, Computer Science (CAH11-01-01) is on the research list in Appendix ATAS but not on the taught masters list. Your university's CAH3 code is what decides it, so confirm with them.

Can I apply for ATAS before I receive my CAS?

Yes. You need your course details and CAH3 code, not the CAS itself. Applying early is the best way to keep your visa timeline on track.
