Quick Answer to UK September Intake 2027: 2 Clear Application Timelines for Indian Students

The UK September intake 2027 runs on two timelines. Undergraduates apply through UCAS: 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses, and 13 January 2027 for most other courses. Postgraduates apply directly to universities, ideally between October 2026 and February 2027. The visa can be applied for 6 months before the course starts, with funds (at the time of writing £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 elsewhere, for up to 9 months) held for 28 days. The visa fee is £558 and the health surcharge £776 a year.

"Is it too early to think about September 2027?" Parents ask us this every autumn, usually a year before the course starts. For the UK September intake 2027, the honest answer is no. If you are finishing Class 12, the main UCAS deadline is in January 2027. If you are finishing a bachelor's degree, the best postgraduate places and scholarships go to people who apply between October and February. A year sounds like plenty of time until you lay out every step on a calendar.

This guide does exactly that. You get two separate timelines for the UK September intake 2027, one for undergraduates applying through UCAS and one for postgraduates applying directly to universities, then a comparison table, the visa window and the mistakes we see most often. Every date and amount was checked on GOV.UK, UCAS and Chevening at the time of writing, so confirm on the official page before you act on any figure.

If you would rather have someone build this plan around your marks, budget and course, a UK student visa consultant can turn the dates below into a personal checklist.

Why the UK September Intake 2027 Starts in October 2026

September is the UK's main intake. Most undergraduate courses only start in September, and it is also the intake with the widest choice of postgraduate courses. That popularity is exactly why late applicants struggle. Popular courses fill, accommodation goes early and visa appointments get busy in July and August.

Three things make the UK September intake 2027 a long project rather than a summer task:

  • Undergraduate deadlines are fixed and early. UCAS sets them, and the main one is 13 January 2027.
  • Scholarship deadlines come before admission deadlines. Chevening, for example, closes in October 2026 for courses starting in September or October 2027.
  • The visa has its own clock. You can only apply in the 6 months before your course starts, and your funds must sit in the account for 28 days before that.

So when you read "September 2027", think "October 2026 to August 2027". That is the real window.

UK September Intake 2027: Undergraduate vs Postgraduate at a Glance

The single biggest difference is who controls the deadline. For undergraduates it is UCAS. For postgraduates it is each university, and sometimes each course. Here is how the two routes compare for the UK September intake 2027.

The Undergraduate Route: UCAS Timeline for the UK September Intake 2027

UCAS opened applications for 2027 entry on 12 May 2026, and completed applications could be sent from 1 September 2026. If you are in Class 12 right now, this is your UK September intake 2027 timeline.

  1. October 2026: shortlist and draft. Pick up to five courses. Check each course's subject requirements and English requirement. Start your personal statement now, because a good one takes several drafts.
  2. 15 October 2026: early deadline. This is the equal consideration date for Oxford and Cambridge and for most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses. If one of these is on your list, your whole application must go by 18:00 UK time on this date.
  3. November to December 2026: submit. Your school adds a reference and predicted marks. We prefer students to submit before the December holidays, because school staff are hard to reach in the final week.
  4. 13 January 2027: equal consideration deadline. Applications for most undergraduate courses must reach UCAS by 18:00 UK time. Universities must consider all applications received by then equally. After it, they can still consider you, but only if they have places left.
  5. February to May 2027: offers and English test. Offers arrive through UCAS. Book IELTS or another accepted test early enough to have the score before your conditions are due.
  6. May to June 2027: board exams and replies. Reply to offers by the date UCAS gives you, choosing a firm and an insurance choice.
  7. 30 June 2027: last date for main scheme. Applications received by 18:00 UK time on this date are sent to universities. Anything later goes straight into Clearing, which opens on 2 July 2027.
  8. July to August 2027: results, CAS and visa. Once your board results meet the offer, the university confirms your place and issues your CAS.

The final date for any 2027 entry application is 23 September 2027, but treat that as a technical limit, not a plan. A visa decision usually takes 3 weeks, so a September offer leaves almost no margin.

The Postgraduate Route: Direct Applications for the UK September Intake 2027

There is no UCAS deadline for most taught master's courses. You apply directly to each university, and each sets its own closing date. Some popular courses close early or stop taking applications once they are full, so "rolling admission" is not the same as "apply any time". For a postgraduate, the UK September intake 2027 looks like this.

  1. October to November 2026: shortlist and test. Choose five to eight courses. Check entry requirements against your expected degree result. Take your English test if you do not have a valid score.
  2. Scholarship check first. Chevening applications for courses starting in September or October 2027 close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Read our Chevening scholarship 2027 guide today if it fits your profile. University scholarships often have their own early deadlines too.
  3. November 2026 to February 2027: apply. Upload transcripts, your statement of purpose, references and CV. Applying in this window gives you the widest choice and more time for scholarships.
  4. December 2026 to April 2027: offers. Many offers are conditional on your final degree marks. Compare offers on total cost, not just tuition.
  5. March to May 2027: accept and pay the deposit. Universities usually ask for a deposit to secure your place. Check whether it is refundable if your visa is refused.
  6. April to June 2027: ATAS if needed. Some science and engineering master's courses need an ATAS certificate before you can apply for the visa. Read our guide on the ATAS certificate to see whether your course is on the list.
  7. June to July 2027: meet conditions, receive CAS. Send your final marks, then the university issues your CAS.
  8. July to August 2027: visa. The visa window opens 6 months before your course start date.

If your profile is strong and you want a top ranked university for the UK September intake 2027, aim to apply before Christmas. If your marks are average and budget matters more, you still have time into early 2027, but do not wait for results season.

Visa Window for the UK September Intake 2027: CAS, Funds and Fees

Both routes meet here. These are the visa rules that shape the last three months of the UK September intake 2027, as stated on GOV.UK at the time of writing.

  • Earliest application: 6 months before your course starts. You must also apply within 6 months of receiving your CAS.
  • Funds: your course fees for the first year (minus anything already paid) plus living costs of £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month outside London, for up to 9 months.
  • The 28 day rule: the money must be held for at least 28 days in a row, and the end of that period must be within 31 days of your visa application.
  • Visa fee: £558 when applying from outside the UK.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 a year for students. For a visa of more than 1 year and up to 18 months, the student charge is £1,164.
  • Decision time: usually within 3 weeks from outside the UK.
  • English: CEFR level B2 for degree level study, and your university may assess this itself.
  • Travel: for a course longer than 6 months, you can arrive up to 1 month before it starts, but not before your visa start date.

Illustrative example (not real figures for any student)

Say your master's for the UK September intake 2027 starts on 20 September 2027 at a university outside London. Your visa window opens around 20 March 2027. If you plan to apply on 25 July 2027, your 28 day period must end no earlier than 24 June 2027, so the full amount should be in the account from late May. If you need an education loan, the sanction letter has to be ready by then too.

For a full breakdown of tuition, rent and the hidden extras, read our guide to the cost of studying in the UK. For a step by step walk through of the CAS itself, see our explainer on the UK student visa process and CAS.

One more date worth knowing: GOV.UK says Graduate visa applications made on or after 1 January 2027 give 18 months of stay for most bachelor's and master's graduates, not 2 years. If you start in September 2027, plan your post-study budget around 18 months.

Where September Plans Usually Slip

Most problems we see with the UK September intake 2027 are not about eligibility. They are about timing. These are the patterns that come up again and again.

  • Treating January as the start, not the deadline. Undergraduates who start their personal statement in December often submit a rushed one.
  • Moving money too late. Funds that arrive one week before the visa application break the 28 day rule. Families often need to plan transfers between accounts in May.
  • Booking the English test after offers. If your offer depends on a score you have not taken yet, one bad test day can push you past your deadline.
  • Forgetting ATAS. It needs time, and it must come before the visa application.
  • Waiting for one dream offer. Apply to a balanced list so a single refusal does not reset your year.

A simple rule: if you are reading this in October 2026 and have not shortlisted courses for the UK September intake 2027, do that this week. If you have a shortlist, start writing.

Is the UK September intake 2027 better than January 2027?

September has far more courses, especially at undergraduate level, and more scholarship options. January suits postgraduates who missed September or need more time, but the course list is shorter.

When can I apply for my visa for the UK September intake 2027?

The earliest is 6 months before your course start date, and you must apply within 6 months of receiving your CAS. Decisions from outside the UK usually take about 3 weeks, so aim to apply in July or early August.

How much money do I need to show for the UK September intake 2027?

At the time of writing, you show your unpaid first year fees plus £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to 9 months. The money must be held for 28 consecutive days, so confirm the current figures on GOV.UK before you plan.

Can I still apply after the UCAS deadline?

Yes, universities can still accept you for the UK September intake 2027 if they have places, and applications after 30 June 2027 go into Clearing. It is a backup, not a plan, because popular courses are usually full by then.
