Australia Scholarships for Indian Students 2027: 6 Honest Facts on What Is Open

Published

Quick Answer to Australia Scholarships for Indian Students 2027

Most Australia scholarships for Indian students now come from universities, not the government. Australia Awards for India are closed at this time and Destination Australia has had no new rounds since 1 July 2024. At the time of writing, open options include the University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships (A$5,000 to A$60,000), UNSW Scientia (full tuition or A$20,000 a year, apply by 30 October 2026), Monash International Merit (A$15,000 a year), UQ International Excellence (25% off tuition) and research scholarships funded through the Research Training Program.

"Is there a full scholarship for Indians in Australia?" It usually follows "what will it cost?" in our Australia counselling sessions. The honest answer has two parts. Australia scholarships for Indian students are real and some are generous, but almost all of them now come from universities, not from the Australian Government. The big ones go to a few applicants who apply early with strong marks.

If you are aiming for a 2027 intake, you will see which schemes are open to Indian citizens now, which popular names are closed, what each award was worth at the time of writing, and the dates you cannot miss. Every figure was checked on a university or Australian Government source in October 2026, so confirm it on the official page before you rely on it.

If you have not yet chosen a course or university, start with an Australia student visa consultant who can check your marks, English score and budget.

Government Australia Scholarships for Indian Students: What Is Actually Open

Students often arrive with a list of government Australia scholarships for Indian students copied from older articles. Two need correcting.

Australia Awards Scholarships

Australia Awards are long term development scholarships funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. In South Asia the regional program is run by Palladium on behalf of the Australian Government. Its scholarship page says the regional round is open to nationals of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Mongolia. India is not in that list.

There is a separate India page. It says the Australian Government has introduced a master's level Australia Awards Scholarship program for India, and that applications for India are closed at this time, with future opportunities to be published on the same page. So treat Australia Awards as something to watch, not something to plan your 2027 budget on. Bookmark australiaawardsindia.org and check it every few months.

Destination Australia

Destination Australia used to fund students at regional campuses. The Department of Education states that, as part of the 2024 to 2025 Budget, there are no further funding rounds from 1 July 2024. Existing recipients keep their support, but you cannot apply for a new award.

Research Training Program

The Research Training Program (RTP) is the one government scheme that genuinely reaches Indian students. The Australian Government gives RTP funding to universities, and the universities award it to domestic and international students in research master's and doctoral degrees. Support can include a fee offset, a living stipend and allowances such as Overseas Student Health Cover. You do not apply to the government. You apply to the university, usually in the same application as your research degree.

One catch: the Department of Education's RTP guidance says universities may spend only up to 10% of their RTP funding on international students. That is why research awards for international applicants are so competitive.

University Australia Scholarships for Indian Students You Can Target in 2027

For bachelor's and coursework master's applicants, university awards are where the real money is. These are the ones we checked on official pages. Each is open to international students, which includes Indian citizens.

University of Sydney: Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships Scheme

  • Who: international students starting a bachelor's or coursework master's degree delivered onshore.
  • Value: five levels, at A$60,000 or A$40,000 (paid over one year) or A$20,000, A$10,000 or A$5,000 (paid for one semester). It is awarded once, in your first year, and is not renewed.
  • How: no separate application. You need an unconditional offer by the round's closing date.
  • Semester 1, 2027 rounds: 17 August 2026 (passed), 5 October 2026 and 16 November 2026.

UNSW Sydney: International Scientia Coursework Scholarship

  • Who: international students starting full time undergraduate or postgraduate coursework in Term 1, 2027.
  • Value: either full tuition for the minimum program length, or A$20,000 a year towards tuition.
  • How: a written application through UNSW's scholarship portal, assessed on academic merit, leadership, extracurricular activities and your reasons for choosing UNSW. You need an offer of admission by 30 October 2026, and conditional offers only count in certain cases.

Monash University: International Merit Scholarship

  • Who: international students with a full, unconditional Monash undergraduate offer, starting full time at a campus in Australia.
  • Value: A$15,000 a year for awards made from 2026, up to A$75,000 in total. Monash says 20 are offered each year.
  • How: automatic consideration. To keep it, you need a distinction average (70% or above) each semester.

University of Queensland: International Excellence Scholarship

  • Who: international students starting full time undergraduate or postgraduate coursework at UQ in 2027.
  • Value: a 25% reduction in tuition fees each semester for the whole program.
  • How: automatic assessment when you apply for admission. It goes to a competitive score among offer holders, and you cannot combine it with another UQ fee reduction.

These are not the only Australia scholarships for Indian students. Most universities run their own awards, so use these four as a benchmark.

Australia Scholarships for Indian Students in Research Degrees

For a PhD or research master's, the numbers change completely, and the most generous Australia scholarships for Indian students are research awards. The University of Melbourne's Graduate Research Scholarships show what the strongest offer at the time of writing:

  • full fee offset for up to four years of a doctorate, or two years of a research master's
  • a living allowance of A$41,100 a year at the 2027 full time rate, for up to 3.5 years of a doctorate
  • a relocation grant of A$3,000 if you are moving from outside Australia
  • single Overseas Student Health Cover for students who need a student visa

Melbourne lists about 600 of these awards and considers you automatically when you apply for a graduate research degree by the course closing date. Selection is based on your academic results and research potential.

Our advice: if your marks are strong and you have research output, contact potential supervisors before you apply. Their support often decides whether you get a stipend.

What a Scholarship Is Worth: A Worked Example

When you compare Australia scholarships for Indian students, percentages and fixed amounts are hard to weigh up. The figures below are illustrative only, not the fee of any real course.

Say your two year master's has a tuition fee of A$45,000 a year.

  • A 25% tuition reduction saves A$11,250 a year, or A$22,500 over two years.
  • A one time A$20,000 award saves A$20,000 in total.
  • A A$20,000 a year tuition award saves A$40,000 over two years.

Myths We Hear About Australia Scholarships for Indian Students

Myth: "Australia Awards will pay for my master's." Fact: the India program is closed at this time, and the regional South Asia round does not list India.

Myth: "I need to write a separate essay for every scholarship." Fact: Sydney, Monash, UQ and Melbourne consider you automatically. UNSW's Scientia is the exception and needs a full application with evidence.

Myth: "A scholarship means I do not need to show funds." Fact: a partial tuition award reduces your cost, but you still have to meet the visa's financial requirements for the rest.

The mistake we see most often is applying late. Many Australia scholarships for Indian students depend on having an unconditional offer by a fixed date. Apply in December and you may miss rounds that August applicants were considered for.
