Canada study permit biometrics are your fingerprints and photo, given in person at a visa application centre. "I paid the fees and now there is a letter asking for my fingerprints. What do I do, and how fast?" We hear some version of this from almost every student the week after they submit a study permit application. Canada study permit biometrics are a short, routine step, but they sit on a strict clock, and a missed or messy appointment can stall a file that was otherwise ready. In this guide I will take you through the whole step: the Biometric Instruction Letter, the 30 day window, the fee, the 10 year validity, who is exempt, what happens at the centre and the problems we see most often.

What Canada Study Permit Biometrics Actually Involve
Biometrics simply means your fingerprints and a digital photo. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses them to confirm your identity, and the page on who must give them includes study permit applicants between the ages of 14 and 79, unless an exemption applies.
Three points shape everything else in this post:
- You must give Canada study permit biometrics in person. Nobody can attend on your behalf.
- They are valid for 10 years, so a student who gave them recently may not need to give them again.
- The timing is set by a letter, not by you. Once the letter arrives, the clock starts.

Canada Study Permit Biometrics in 7 Steps
This is the order we walk students through for Canada study permit biometrics. Each step is short, but skipping one is where delays begin.
- Check whether you need to give them. If you gave biometrics to Canada within the last 10 years, IRCC's Check status tool can show whether they are still valid and when they expire.
- Pay the biometrics fee with your application. Study permit applications are made online, and IRCC asks you to pay the biometrics fee when you submit. Paying later is possible, but it slows things down.
- Wait for the Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL). After the fee is paid, IRCC issues the BIL in your online account. It confirms that you need to give biometrics and explains how to book.
- Note the date on the letter. You have 30 days from the date on the BIL to give your Canada study permit biometrics. Count from that date, not from the day you happened to open the account.
- Book an appointment. You need an appointment at a visa application centre (VAC), and IRCC states that booking is free.
- Attend with the right papers. Take your BIL and a valid passport. Both are required.
- Keep checking your account. After the appointment your fingerprints and photo are sent to IRCC electronically and processing continues. Watch for any further request, such as a passport request if you are approved.
The mistake we see most often is at step 4. A student sees the BIL, plans to book "next week", and then exams or a family event take over. Book on the day the letter arrives, even if the slot is a few days away.

Canada Study Permit Biometrics Fee and 10 Year Validity
At the time of writing, IRCC's fee list shows these amounts for the study permit and Canada study permit biometrics:

Validity is where Canada study permit biometrics save you money later. IRCC says biometrics are valid for 10 years, and if you gave them within that period they are automatically attached to a new visitor visa, study permit, work permit or extension. They stay valid even if the application they were given for is refused.
There is one catch that surprises families. IRCC cannot issue a visa or permit beyond the expiry of your biometrics, or more than 10 years from the last time you gave them. So if your old biometrics expire in 18 months and your programme runs for two years, your documents could be cut short. IRCC lets you give biometrics again, even while the old ones are valid, so that your visa or permit can run for longer. If your dates are close, we usually suggest doing exactly that.
Who Is Exempt From Canada Study Permit Biometrics
Most Indian students will need to give Canada study permit biometrics. IRCC's exemptions that matter for study permit applicants are:
- children under 14;
- applicants over 79;
- US nationals applying for a study or work permit;
- people who already gave biometrics for a permanent residence application that is still being processed;
- heads of state and holders of diplomatic or official visas, which will rarely apply to a student.
IRCC uses your age on the date you submit the application. A younger sibling who is 13 when the family applies does not need to give Canada study permit biometrics, even if they turn 14 while the file is in process.

What Happens at the Visa Application Centre
IRCC lists 10 Canada visa application centres in India: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. For students in Gujarat, Ahmedabad is the centre in the state. The centres are run by VFS Global, so check the current address, opening days and booking system on the VFS Global Canada site before you travel.
The Canada study permit biometrics visit itself is quick and quiet. Staff check your BIL and passport, scan your fingerprints and take a photo. A few practical points from IRCC's photo guidance:
- glasses are fine if there is no glare, but sunglasses and tinted lenses are not;
- keep your hair away from your face.
After the appointment, your biometrics are encrypted and sent to a secure Government of Canada database. IRCC says collection centres do not keep them once they are sent. The RCMP checks the fingerprints against Canadian records, and the information can be shared with some partner countries, as IRCC explains on its biometrics pages.
Common Canada Study Permit Biometrics Problems and Fixes
Most issues with Canada study permit biometrics come down to timing or paperwork. Here is how to handle the ones we see.
You cannot attend within 30 days. IRCC's guidance is to use its web form to explain why you need more time, with details of your situation. Do this before the deadline, not after. Illness, a medical emergency or a closed centre are the kind of reasons worth explaining clearly.
You carried an old BIL. If you reapply after a refusal, only use the letter issued for the current application. IRCC warns that using a BIL from a previous application can delay your file or lead to refusal.
Your fingerprints did not scan well. Worn or dry fingertips sometimes give poor readings. IRCC says that if it cannot get high quality fingerprints, you may be asked to give biometrics again later. That is a request, not a refusal, so simply book again when asked.
You forgot to pay the fee. IRCC's help centre explains that you can pay online afterwards and upload the receipt in your IRCC secure account. The BIL only follows once the fee is paid, so every day of delay pushes your whole timeline back.

Myth vs Fact
- Myth: getting a BIL means the visa is approved. Fact: the letter only confirms you must give biometrics. The officer has not made a decision yet.
- Myth: a refusal means you pay for biometrics again next time. Fact: biometrics given for a study permit application remain valid for 10 years, even if that application was refused.
- Myth: a parent or agent can attend for you. Fact: biometrics must be given in person, with your own passport and BIL.
- Myth: valid biometrics mean you should never give them again. Fact: if they expire before your programme ends, giving them again can let IRCC issue a longer document.
