Chevening Scholarship 2027 for Indian Students: 7 Essential Eligibility Rules and Deadlines

"Is it too late to apply for Chevening this year?" If you are reading this in late September 2026, that is probably your question too. The short answer: no, but the clock is loud. The Chevening Scholarship for 2027/28 closes on 6 October 2026, and there is no second round.

I am writing this for Indian graduates with a few years of work behind them who want a one-year master's in the UK, fully funded by the UK government. You will get the verified dates for this cycle, the seven eligibility rules that knock most people out, what the award actually pays for, and how to use the next two weeks well. Every fact here comes from chevening.org, checked at the time of writing, so confirm anything that matters on the official site before you submit.

Chevening Scholarship 2027/28 Dates: The Deadline Is 6 October 2026

Many older guides still say the deadline falls in early November. Do not rely on them. For the 2027/28 cycle, Chevening's official application timeline reads as follows:

Two dates decide most outcomes. The first is 6 October, which you cannot move. The second is 8 July 2027: a Chevening Scholarship offer is conditional until you upload an unconditional offer from one of your three courses. If you are shortlisted, you will also need to upload photo ID, your undergraduate certificate and your reference letters at least seven working days before your interview, so ask your referees early.

Chevening Scholarship Eligibility: 7 Rules Indian Applicants Must Meet

The Chevening Scholarship team sifts for eligibility before anyone reads your essays, so check these seven rules first. They come from the official eligibility page.

1. Citizenship. You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. India is one, with its own country page on chevening.org.
2. Return home. You must commit to returning to your country of award for at least two years after the scholarship ends.
3. Undergraduate degree. You need a degree that qualifies you for a UK master's. You must have finished your undergraduate studies at least two years before the application deadline, though the certificate itself is only needed by interview time.
4. Work experience. At least 2,800 hours, roughly two years of full-time work at 35 hours a week, gained over a minimum of two years and after completing your undergraduate degree. Full-time, part-time, voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships all count.
5. Three courses. You must apply to three different eligible UK master's courses.
6. One unconditional offer. You must hold an unconditional offer from at least one of them by 8 July 2027.
7. No disqualifiers. You are not eligible if you hold British or dual British citizenship (with narrow exceptions), live in the UK when you apply, work for (or are an immediate family member of someone working for) a UK government department, the British Council or a partner university, or have already received a UK government-funded scholarship.

The rule that catches people most often in our experience is the work experience timing. Internships during your degree feel like experience, and they are, but Chevening counts hours after graduation. Add up your post-degree weeks honestly before you spend a single evening on essays.

The Chevening Scholarship also has no upper age limit, and it has not had its own English language requirement since 2020. Your universities still do, which matters later.

Is the Chevening Scholarship Right for You?

Eligibility is the floor. Fit is the real question, because Chevening says it looks for ambition, leadership and a passion for influencing positive change at home.

It suits you if:

• You have two or more years of real work since graduating and can point to results you drove.
• You have a clear plan to come back to India and use the degree, and the two-year return rule feels natural rather than a sacrifice.
• Your goals connect to areas Chevening names, such as climate action, economic prosperity and conflict recovery.
• A one-year taught master's is exactly what you need next.

Look elsewhere if:

• You are a fresh graduate. You cannot meet the work rule yet, so look at university awards now and keep the Chevening Scholarship for a later year.
• Your main goal is to stay and work in the UK after your course. The return commitment makes the Chevening Scholarship the wrong fit.
• You want a PhD, a research MRes, a part-time or distance course, or a course longer than 12 months. None of these qualify.

What the Chevening Scholarship Covers

A full award, according to Chevening's own FAQ at the time of writing, includes:

• Payment of your tuition fees
• A monthly living allowance (stipend) for accommodation and living costs, with a different rate for London and for the rest of the UK
• An arrival allowance and a departure allowance
• Economy travel to and from your home country by an approved route, for you only
• The cost of your visa application, for you only
• A travel top up allowance
• Up to 75 pounds towards TB testing, where required

Two limits are worth knowing. First, travel and visa costs cover you alone, so a spouse or child would be at your own expense. Second, MBA programmes carry a tuition fee cap of 22,000 pounds at the time of writing, and you pay anything above it. If you are weighing an MBA in the UK, price that gap before you list one.

Choosing Your Three UK Courses

This is the part most applicants rush, and it is the part we help with most. Chevening's course rules at the time of writing:

• Three different master's courses, at the same university or at different ones.
• Full-time and taught, lasting between nine and twelve months.
• No PhDs, no research MRes, no part-time or distance learning, and no more than one month of study outside the UK.
• No pre-sessional English course to meet a university's language condition, so you need the IELTS or equivalent score your university asks for on your own.

The Chevening Scholarship guidance suggests three similar courses at three different universities, to raise your odds of getting into at least one. My advice goes one step further. Pick one ambitious choice, one solid match and one safe option where your profile clearly clears the entry bar. Then apply to all three universities early, because the Chevening Scholarship is not confirmed until an unconditional offer is in hand by 8 July 2027. Writing the Four Chevening Scholarship Essays

The online form asks four questions. Here is what each one is testing, based on Chevening's application guidance.

1. Leadership and influence. Examples of taking the lead and influencing others, with clear results. A title is not leadership. A problem you moved, with a number or outcome attached, is.

2. Networking and relationships. How you built working relationships and how that collaboration led to measurable outcomes. Show who you brought together and what changed.

3. Course choice. Focus only on your first choice course. Explain how it connects to your background and goals, and name specific modules that give you the skills you lack today.

4. Career plan. A short, mid and long term plan with clear, realistic goals, tied to the change you want to make in India after the Chevening Scholarship.

Two rules to take seriously. Chevening strictly prohibits using AI software to generate your answers, and the application is free, so ignore anyone who asks you to pay a fee to apply. Chevening Scholarship Myths We Hear from Indian Applicants

Myth: "I need IELTS to apply for the Chevening Scholarship."
Fact: Chevening dropped its own English requirement in 2020. Your universities still set one, and you cannot use a pre-sessional course to meet it.

Myth: "I need a university offer before I apply."
Fact: You apply for the Chevening Scholarship with three course choices. The unconditional offer is due by 8 July 2027, not in October.

Myth: "My college internships count towards two years of work."
Fact: Chevening counts experience gained after you complete your undergraduate degree.

Myth: "A consultant can improve my chances of selection."

A Chevening Scholarship Plan for the Final Two Weeks

If you are starting today, 22 September 2026, here is a realistic order of work before 6 October:

1. Day 1: Check all seven rules above. Total your post-degree work hours. If you fall short, stop and plan for next year.
2. Days 2 to 3: Shortlist three eligible courses and read each module list properly.
3. Days 4 to 9: Draft all four essays, then cut every sentence without evidence.
4. Days 10 to 12: Get one honest outside reader, then revise.
5. Day 13: Submit, well before 4:30 pm India time on 6 October. Do not leave it to the last hour.
