Quick Answer to GREAT Scholarships for Indian Students 2027: 7 Honest Facts for UK Study

GREAT scholarships for Indian students give at least £10,000 towards tuition for a one-year taught master's at participating UK universities. At the time of writing, only the 2026-27 round is confirmed: India was included, with 12 institutions on the British Council India page, and deadlines set by each university fell between April and May 2026. The 2027-28 list has not been published yet, so get your course offers early and check the official pages.

"Is the GREAT Scholarship open for 2027 yet?" Students start asking us this around October, usually once they have a shortlist of UK master's courses and a budget that does not quite work. It is a fair question, and the answer needs some care: at the time of writing, the British Council has not yet published the 2027-28 round. Everything confirmed today belongs to the 2026-27 round, which closed for most universities in spring 2026.

So this guide does two things. It explains GREAT scholarships for Indian students using the latest confirmed round, clearly labelled as 2026-27, and it shows you how to prepare now so you are ready when the 2027-28 list appears. If you are still choosing between universities or worrying about the visa side, a UK student visa consultant can check your plan before you commit to a course list. Every rule below was checked on the British Council's Study UK site, the British Council India site and the universities' own scholarship pages. Rules change between rounds, so confirm each point on the official page before you apply.

GREAT Scholarships for Indian Students: Where the 2027 Round Stands

The GREAT Scholarships are jointly funded by the UK government's GREAT Britain Campaign, the British Council and the participating UK universities. For 2026-27, the British Council says more than 140 scholarships were offered by more than 60 universities across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, for students from 18 countries. India is one of those 18 countries.

Here is the honest position on GREAT scholarships for Indian students in 2027:

  • Confirmed: India was included in the 2026-27 round, for courses starting in the 2026-27 academic year.
  • Not yet confirmed: whether India will be included in 2027-28, which universities will take part, the award amounts and the deadlines.
  • What we would expect, but cannot promise: a similar structure, because the format has stayed consistent across recent rounds. Treat that as a planning assumption, not a fact.

That uncertainty is exactly why GREAT scholarships for Indian students should sit inside a wider funding plan. Our guide to UK scholarships for Indian students covers the other awards you can apply for at the same time.

What GREAT Scholarships for Indian Students Pay and Cover

The British Council describes the award as £10,000 towards tuition fees for a one-year taught postgraduate course. The India page phrases it as a minimum of £10,000, and some universities offer more: the University of Bristol's 2026 award for India was £13,000 towards tuition fees. These figures are at the time of writing, so confirm the current value on each university's page.

Three points matter when you plan your budget around GREAT scholarships for Indian students:

  1. It is a tuition award. It reduces your fee bill. It does not pay rent, food, flights or your visa costs.
  2. The university pays it, after you register. The British Council states that funding is issued by the individual university to successful scholars after registration.
  3. It is usually one award per country at each university. Bristol, Reading and Surrey each listed a single scholarship for India in 2026-27.

A worked example helps. The figures below are illustrative only, not quotes for any real course.

Illustrative itemWithout the awardWith a £10,000 award
Tuition for a one-year master's (example figure)£24,000£14,000
Living costs for the year (example figure)£13,000£13,000
Total you still need to fund£37,000£27,000

The award makes a real difference, but you still fund most of the year yourself. Use our guide to the cost of studying in UK to build your own numbers before you count on any scholarship.

The 2026-27 Universities Offering GREAT Scholarships for Indian Students

For 2026-27, the British Council India page lists 12 GREAT scholarships for Indian students at 12 institutions. The Study UK India page lists the same institutions plus the University of Kent, so check both pages when the next round appears. Notice how many are creative or performing arts specialists. That is a pattern worth noticing if you are an art, design, music or dance student.

Multi-subject universitiesAnglia Ruskin University, Queen's University Belfast, University of Bristol, University of Dundee, University of Kent (Study UK page), University of Reading, University of Surrey, UWE Bristol

Each university decides which courses qualify, so read its page carefully. For the three multi-subject universities we checked in detail, the 2026-27 India rules looked like this:

Who GREAT Scholarships for Indian Students Suit, and Who They Do Not

The British Council's 2026-27 criteria for GREAT scholarships for Indian students say a scholar must be a passport holder and permanent resident of India, hold an undergraduate degree, be motivated with an interest in the proposed subject, and meet the university's English language requirement. Scholars must also be willing to attend a networking event, stay in touch with the British Council and their university, and act as an ambassador for the programme. The British Council adds that scholars are invited to a welcome event in the first semester and a networking event in the second.

GREAT scholarships for Indian students are a good fit if:

  • you want a one-year taught master's, not a PhD or a two-year programme
  • your target course is at one of the participating universities, or you are flexible about which university you choose
  • your academic record is strong, since Reading, for example, said it would award primarily on previous academic achievement
  • you can explain clearly why the subject matters to you and what you will do with it

They are a weak fit if:

  • you have already fixed a university that is not on the list
  • you need full funding to go at all, because the award covers part of tuition only
  • you are applying late, after most offers and deadlines in the spring

If you need full funding, compare the Chevening Scholarship and the Commonwealth Scholarship for Indian students. Both run on very different timelines and selection rules, so read them early.

How to Apply for GREAT Scholarships for Indian Students

The process confuses people because there is no single British Council application form. You apply through each university. Based on the 2026-27 round, the steps look like this:

  1. Check the India page. Start from the Study UK GREAT Scholarships India page and open each participating university's entry.
  2. Read the university's own scholarship page. It tells you which courses qualify, the deadline and how to apply.
  3. Get your course offer first. Bristol asked for a conditional or unconditional offer, Surrey asked for an unconditional offer plus a university reference number, and Reading opened its form to offer holders through its applicant portal.
  4. Submit the scholarship application by that university's deadline, following its instructions exactly.
  5. Wait for the university's decision. Successful scholars hear directly from the university. Reading, for example, said it would notify successful candidates no later than four weeks after its deadline.
  6. Register and receive the funding as a reduction in your tuition fees.

The mistake we see most often is students treating GREAT scholarships for Indian students as a separate process to start after admission. It is not. Your course application is the first step of the scholarship application, so a late course application can make you miss the scholarship entirely.
